    Hi, hoping someone can point me in the right direction here. I used to have a b5 passat (99) and I had a scan tool off ebay for it which was brilliant. It was a memoscan vag5053 and could read fault codes, erase them, throttle adaptation etc and it also worked great on a 2002 polo and 2002 bora without any probs. I now have a 2005 b5.5 passat highline and this scan tool doesn't link up to the system on it. From what I have read, I think the b5.5 protocol is different and thats why its not communicating. There are loads of scan tools for sale so just wandered if anyone knows of one that might be ok for my b5.5. I know vcds or vagcom etc would be the ideal but all I want is a scan tool like the one before as it was enough for my needs. PS I did buy one off ebay recently (mini vag505) that was supposed to be more up to date but that one didn't communicate either. Can anyone confirm that the protocol is ISO 15765?, my pin out on the cars diagnostic socket is 1,4,5,6,7,14,16. My knowledge is pretty limited and I'm just saying what I've googled so far

    If the 2005 Passat is pre-facelift then the protocol is OBDII/KWP-2000 not CANBUS.

    The fact that both your scanners fail to communicate suggests there's something amiss with the vehicle.

    What works on a '99 B5 an '02 1J and an '02 9N should work on an '05 B5.5

    Thanks for the info. I'm not sure if mines pre face lift or not. I'm sure I read somewhere that my one is iso 15765 which my other scanners don't support AFAIK. I sure hope there's not a problem with the obd on the car itself, worst case I'll have to get someone with a proper system to plug in and see what happens.

    Does it look like this;

    Or like this;

    The former has a KWP-2000 interface, the latter, CANBUS.

    Then my post above remains true, there's no reason why the tools you have shouldn't work.

    Have you checked our VCDS user map to see if there's anyone close who could assist you with a scan?

    Just an update on this issue, I bought another scan tool yesterday (more expensive but much better one) which arrived today and it read my ecu and found a couple of fault codes with ease so it turns out that the car side of the diagnostics was absolutely fine, it was just the other scan tools weren't compatible.

    I got the Foxwell NT500 from Gendan automotive. Bit more expensive but on first impressions, money well spent.
