    Hello One and All

New member to the forum, popped by to introduce myself and my vehicle.

I have an 2003 A4 Avant 2.5TDi Quattro Sport that I bought from direct Audi at six months old. Sadly late last month the engine died on me and I haven't figure out the issue as yet. Hoping I might find some inspiration and answers as to the possible issue or issues on this form.

I have loved driving my car for the past 100 000 miles and hope I will add to that tally again real soon.

    Hope to chat soon.

    Cheers for now.

    Andy

If there are no codes on the engine ECU, the most common cause of this is the diesel injection pump.

    Hi Crasher

Thanks for the pointer. When my car was picked up by recovery, the guy who came out to me checked the codes and all were clear. The noise that came from the engine before it died sounded like the big ends were falling out and the revs dropped away before recovery to a steady state once more. The following day the car ran find for about 5 miles and when I switched off, it failed to restart, it did catch for a second or two and then died, all accompanied by the same noise of the previous day. I will have a look at the fuel pump when the weather begins to play ball once more. I don't have the option of a garage at the moment and have served my time getting both cold and wet!!

    Thanks again.

If the full timing belt needs doing, it is a huge job to do outdoors and really you need a set of locking tools. There is not much you can do to check the pump, when they fail they still pump fuel out of the pipes, it's just that it is not enough to crack the injectors open. If the cam belt system looks intact, I give them a sniff of brake cleaner (EXTREME CAUTION REQUIRED) and if they run on a sniff and there are no codes, it has to be the pump.

The cam belt was changed at 76 500 miles and the car now has 102 000 miles on the clock, I am guessing that the belt wouldn't have worn out so quickly. I asked that Audi OE parts were used at all times when the car was serviced. The service at which the belt was changed was undertaken by a VAG trained Technician. I have hadd the car looked over, but the guy's in question were stumped as to the problem. I was told that fuel was reaching the engine, unfortunately I don't know whether it was under the correct pressure. From the comments you have made above, it is sounding more likely to be the pump. Thanks again for taking time to point me in the right direction.

    Cheers for now.

    Hi Crasher

Not been on for a while, been busy renovating my home!! As you might have gathered the renovation is taking up most of my time, so could I ask what you might charge for diagnosing and potentially replacing my fuel pump? I am only looking for a ball park figure not a quotation that is in anyway binding.

    Cheers for now.

You need to decide if the full timing belt should be changed, it is every four years or 80K miles (ish).

The cambelt is fine, so it will just be the pump on this occasion.

    Cheers for now.
