Went to startup my Seat 1.2 and it started and then turned off. Anyways, tried to crank but wasn't getting anywhere. Called the AA out, who spent quite a bit of time trying to get it going. They have come to the conclusion that its my timing chain needs replacing (might of moved a notch or two) after ruling out a couple of things.

Anyone know how much this would 'roughly' cost? I've got a Seat 1.2, only done 69,000 miles - wondering whether its worth doing or getting rid of? It's on an 03 plate, would a mobile mechanic be able to do it on the street or is it a job for the garage? Anyone recommend someone in Leicester?

    Cheers

It's not a job you'd do on the street. If the chain jumped you need the head off to check the valves and when you have the head off you need to check and probably replace all the valves. You'd also need to check if any pistons are damaged. You need timing chain, guides, sprockets tensioner etc along with a new head gasket, get the valves done, new coolant and an oil change. That would take the most of a day say 6 hours labour, whats the car worth? You could ask around see if there's an Independent VAG mechanic near you

Thanks for replying. Sounds like quite a lot of work, didn't realise jumping a couple of notches 'may' have caused that much damage. Car isn't worth much, -was more of a trustee transporter from work and back, so erring on the side of getting rid of it.

I have had several of those that jumped a tooth or 3. The work costs hundreds and used engines are like rocking horses poo.
