Our 6 speed (Sport) Passat AVF has developed a whining noise (like an aircraft taking off) from 30mph-70mph that has increased in severity over the past 1000 miles and is dependant on road speed and not revs - it happens in gear or in neutral and doesnt make any difference whether the clutch is engaged or not. I dont think it is the wheel bearings as doesnt get any worse when cornering but as far as I am aware it is on the original bearings so does anyone think it could be this? - we have owned from 156K - 300K miles . Could it be the differential or maybe a drive shaft?. Gear selection remains sublimely smooth.

Could it be some bearing in the gearbox , has the gearbox oil ever been changed ?

Wheel bearings dont always change sound when cornering, I'd jack it up and support it then spin each wheel with your ear close to the hub. I think if it was the gearbox you'd hear a change in sound in different gears or as you coast in neutral or accelerated then went into overrun.

Heh, thanks. Yeh, I wil check this and i agree - it doesnt change 'note' when under load or on the overrun downhill. I actually bought some rear wheel bearings 8 years ago to fit but never got round to the job -had a gearbox specialist suggest that this was the problem but the sound disappeared over time so never got around to fitting them.

If its not wheel bearings it could be Differential/inner driveshaft bearings. They also wont be affected by what gear your in. Could also be gearbox output shaft, this also wont be affected by what gear your in, only by wheel speed.

    Good Luck

Thanks for the advise. I can't find any obvious problems with the wheel bearings so I guess it's just 'turn up the stereo time' and just hope that it doesnt get worse until I can find some workshop space (in Somerset) to get at the diff/gearbox. The clutch is still perfect after 300K miles but it seems churlish to change the diff without doing the clutch at the same time, so does anyone have a ballpark figure for the dual mass flywheel clutch assembly?.
    Cheers
