On an 05 A4 diesel, looking in, it's behind the red cable and goes under a cover at the back of the battery. It's a corrugated cable, it goes to the right along a plastic cover. I was going to take it out to put in another car but don't know what this black cables for or where it goes

You sure it's a cable and not a breather hose?

It's a breather hose as above & runs to the bottom of the car just in case any excess battery acid comes out.

    Mine also has one.
I also assume a replacement ( non factory ) battery wouldn't have one?

I just replaced my factory-fitted Moll battery - after 9 years, pretty good going! - in my '06 B7 S-Line TDI with an Exide EA770 battery. That doesn't have anywhere to connect a breather hose.
