    Hi,

I just. Had a timing belt kit fitted, the car came back, was difficult to start when warm, impossible to start cold the following day. It would fire as normal, but cut out after 2-3 seconds. Fault code was 012296 cam pos sensor signal out of range.

I managed to get the car running by unplugging the cam sensor. I replaced the cam sensor with a beru item from ecp. Car now starts but has long cranking time and not a very clear fire up when warm

Fault code now is 000833 cam position sensor implausible signal

    Any suggestions welcome please

Yes, it is pretty much a certainty that they have set the the cam timing incorrectly, they probably did not use the correct locking pins and this can allow the exhaust cam to move.

look for tell tale tippex marks if you pop off the top cover, bit of a giveaway that they didn't use the pins ! crank may have been off as well when they fitted the belt.

Sorry I should have mentioned, it is a 2009 6L tdi with I think a bms Engine. With the cam pulley pinned, the notch on the harmonic damper lines up with the pointer on the lower timing cover, to me it appears to be right. IF i need to reset the timing from scratch how would I go about this, or is there a torsion value I could check?
    I Appreciate your answers cheers

You MUST set these with a crank locking plate and a cam locking pin, the adjustment is very fine.

Finally put this one to bed, used the locking tools, it was about 1/2 of a tooth out at the crank. Initially, still had poor starting and was still throwing up the implausible signal fault code. I decided to refit the original Abe cam pos sensor, which thankfully did the trick.
