So I've been looking at a few A6s. Some have satnav that looks like just orange text on a screen, one had the full pretty colour maps I've come to love and expect. Am I missing something here?

The lesser one you're describing is MMI Basic.

    Not strictly true:

    MMI Basic = No satnav
MMI Basic Plus = non colour Satnav
MMI High = colour MMI (with or without nav)

So in answer to OP's question the A6 C6 was available in all three guises. Generally the first two most common in rep cars. the 'High' option most taken by private buyers or those company car drivers who a) chose it as a option and/or b) who received a higher allowance to use on such things
