damn, that sounds pretty bad. I would hazzard a guess the seller might have known of the problem if it is as bad as you describe. Problem is a lot of cars are 'sold as seen' and therefore you accept that at the point of sale. Perhaps some legal bod might say otherwise but I think you're in a bad position to contest this with the seller.

Did you sign anything when you bought the car?

Here's some pics of under car, first pic is of bottom of plastic carton to catch oil, next one is of filters on same hose and final picture is of where hose connects to gearbox, is this where the breather should be?

Wow ! a lot of MacGyver stuff !!!! It looks to me that you got more then you paid for? I could check it out but I'm preeety sure breathers are placed somewhere nearer to the top of the box. However if the
previous owner had a problem with coolant ingress from the radiator I think this would be the right place to drain out excessive fluid from the box....

I was thinking that myself but hoping somebody would tell me different, do you know whay the brass filter could be in the photo it has a couple of wires coming off it that dissapear above the transmission.
If I removed the fabricated breather and put a plug there would it cause me any problems, other than if it is being used for draining off coolant. I'm fairly certain transmission is in need of replacing, but was driving very well up until the problems showed.

No sorry, no idea about the brass filter. Open the smallest of the 2 screws under the sump, let out some oil and see what color it have. White means coolant means new gearbox...

ok will do, is it supposed to be gold colour, I think it may just be black if any comes out at all lol.

Either honestly sell the car, or get a recon box.

Thats sort of where I'm at the car is lovely but I'm wary now of what else may have been hidden. Ive found a 2001 tdi quattro box but off a saloon rather than avant same as mine will these boxes be the same?
