As mentioned here I found my 1.6 (AZD engine)'s intake air preheating thermostat was stuck on 100% hot air. As a temporary fix I've wedged it to be 100% ambient air, but I'd like to replace the thermostat.

On my car the thermostat is in the engine cover/air intake assembly which is part number 036129607BE. The diagram/parts catalogue I'm looking doesn't mention the thermostat. Anyone know if it's available by itself (from VW or anywhere else)? It seems a bit of a waste to have to buy the whole assembly, which is probably pretty expensive, for the sake of a thermostat. Anyone know how much the whole assembly is from VW?

The thermostat is marked #2 in the bottom picture of this page.

    Many thanks.

You can't buy any internal parts for that filter unit, it is £164.24 retail inc. VAT from VW dealers. It is only used on the AZD engine in the Golf 4/Bora.

Ouch, ok thanks very much for the info! Perhaps I should just leave it wedged on 100% ambient air...

There is a significant risk of the throttle body butterfly freezing up with ice during cold wet weather and this can lead to hard to trace (because it melts in seconds) cold weather running issues with the EPC light coming on and sowing the throttle body to be faulty when it isn't.

i finally found the problem by running it until it stopped, then very quickly pulled the air cleaner off, to find a lot of ice down the carb, yet it wasn't even cold outside. physics is amazing..

Aha, that doesn't sound like much fun. I'll get it changed then.

I also noticed that my cylinder #3 coil pack is taller than the rest, and was rubbing on the intake directly under the thermostat. Presumably transmitting vibration into it. Not sure if that'd contribute to the thermostat's demise. I've got a spare coil pack in the boot so I'll swap them before replacing the intake.

    Cheers.
