I just wanted to share my understanding of the emissions issue with everyone....

According to VW, my Golf is affected by the emissions issue, and will be selected for a recall. However, thinking things through, I have realised what a load of media hype this whole 'scandal' is.

NOx emissions are not measured anywhere in Europe for either road tax ratings or MOT purposes. Measurements for these are CO2 and smoke opacity respectively, so there really isn't any need for the car to be recalled, and seeing as these recalls are classed as Product Development Programmes, rather than a safety recall, the owner is not obliged to have the recall carried out.

It stands to reason that if the recall is designed to bring NOx emissions down, then either mpg or performance will likely suffer, so, seeing as the recall is not required in Europe, why would anyone offer up their car for modification - there's simply no point.

I would certainly hold out to see what the customers of recalled cars are saying first, its no good getting the car in spec for the emissions if it won't pull the skin of a rice pudding,I suspect there will be litigation towards vw from disgruntled customers.

    Thanks nevo, my thoughts exactly.

PS: Anyone tired of reading about this issue, just remember, you are not obliged to read threads about it, so if others want to discuss it, just leave them to it, the same as you would with any other thread you happen to not be interested in or find tiresome.

Just need to find out though if Petrols are affected given the comment that it's "...largely diesel..."....then it becomes a real issue, especially if C02 is indeed affected...
