A4 TDI 2009 B8 - Starting problems

Hi,

I have a problem to get my engine started.
When I slide in the key, I just hear a "click" from the engine, and nothing more happens.
I have measured the battery witch I bought new last year, and the multimeter shows 12.7V.
All lights are in dashboard as normal.

If I charge the battery over the night, the car starts in the morning...but a few hours after - its the same again.

Is it possible that the starter is broken and will not turn as normal, unless its getting some "extra"?
The car had this problem from time to time the past six months, but now its getting difficult to start even after multiple attempts, without giving the battery some extra charging over the night.
Will also mention that I measured the amps with egnition on (between battery + and the car + wire) and it showed ~0.2 after the car`s start up prosess finished.
I`ve heard that should be ok, considering that the battery should not be abnormally fast tapped from the car. !?

I want some advices before I go ahead and buy a new starter.

Do you guys think the starter is the problem, and is it other checkouts I should preforme to find and be shure whats the specific problem?

(Also I`ve tried to search for "How to change starter on B8, but I can`t find any tread....telling me that ppl normally dont do it themself because of a complex and tricky work!?)

I have double checked dynamo and battery.

Measurements:
-Battery before engine start 12.7V
-Directly on dynamo 14.7V
-Battery when engine running 13.5V

Is 13.5V on battery when engine running low?
I bought the battery in end of sept last year from an autorized dealer and I was quite shure it was ok... but now Im getting unshure.
Should the engine start anyway as long as it is 12.7V on battery before start?

Hi, go for warranty for the battery before you can change the starter which I don't think is the problem, however I also suggest that you remove the alternator black cable $ make sure that the end terminals r clean n re-attached tightly.

Went to a battery dealer today and they measured both battery and dynamo for me.
The battery is ok and so is the dynamo, but the charging on the battery is to low.

Then I went to the Audi dealer and I was told that the car may need coding for a new battery.
They could not give the car correct code without me buying a new genuine battery from them.
All in all, he could not give me a price today, but I understood that it will cost a lot considering that the car already has a good battery!

Starting to get irritated so I just went home...

Is this a big deal to do myself? What if I buy a codereader like this...?

Yes you can code yourself, if your new battery has the same characteristics as old one. Just change last digit of serial number which is already there,VCDS (screen 19-CAN@gateway _> Long Adaptation -> Channel 4 -> Battery identification) etc...

Find somebody with cable in your area, 5 minutes job. Still cant belive its coding issue only, but you can try-out.


Not sure about this code reader - is there possible to change codings in modules!!!

Not a easy fix for me, this one.

After charging overnight, it start fine. But later same day - the same problem.
I have no other ideas than to get connected to the car by vcds.
The diagnostic scan tool that I considered buying on ebay, could not be used to decode for new battery.
Dont know anyone with a cable, so I ordered the cable ($349) from ross-tech. Hope I will be able to sort out the problem by giving the car the new battery code.

Ouch!

I got the VCDS cable and software yesterday, and did a diagnostic test.
SO many fault codes showing up, so I dont know where to start.
I replaced the batterycode with the one on the new battery, but it didnt seem to have a big effect.
Got the same faultcodes on the second diagnose.
Anyone have a clue where I should start to figure out of these issues?

Did you clear the faults before taking the second reading? If not, try clearing all the faults and driving the car with the coded battery and then see what the faults are. It looks like a lot of the faults are old ones going by date and mileage.
They all seem to be electrical faults.

I dont think those faults are related to the problems I had.
Yesterday, I gave the car the correct battery code. Today it starts normally.
Im not shure the starting problem is solved permanently, but as for now it seems like the car have decided that Im allowed to use it.
Hope it will stay in this good mode!
