First off sorry for the long post but am desperate for help!!! Recently had a problem with my 2008 2.0 tdi where we lost drive all of a sudden, after much confusion with garage they finally found out it was the drivers side driveshaft not the flywheel or clutch, happy days I thought so it was replaced and on initial drive everything seemed to be fine however straight away I noticed when on full lock turning right at slow speed there was a juddering, then I noticed mainly in second and third gear between 1500 and 2000 rpm the gear stickwas shaking quite badly and also when accelerating throughout the gears the front end seemed to have a general feeling of vibrating. So take back to garage and after lots of head scratching they check engine mounts, gearbox mounts etc and finally shrug there shoulders and say they don't know, have since taken to another garage who tried replacing the passenger side driveshaftas well but made no difference, they are now saying that the drivers side driveshaftis very rigid and I wondered if there should be any play at all from left to right on the driveshaftor if there is any reason why I would get all these problems from changing a driveshaft, it changes gear perfectly and and the clutch feels fine and it drove perfectly before driveshaft was replaced, to be honest I'm exhausted by it all and am frustrated that several so called mechanics can't find a solution, any help or pointers would be massively appreciated.

All drive shafts I have played with have end to end play ie they slide a little towards each cv joint.
I would say as it was fine before they touched it, whatever they have touched is causing the problem.
You mention much confusion, what else did they do before they sussed it was the driveshaft?

When you say it lost drive due to the shaft, did the shaft come away from the gearbox diff drive flange? If the shaft had been running loose on the flange for a while it may have worn the flange so the new shaft is not running true. It does sound like the OS shaft is the problem though, turn the steering full lock and see if you can slide the shaft in and out then compare it to the other side.. jack the wheel up and turn it by hand on full lock, listen for clicking or a notchy feel as it goes round.

Hi Thanks for replying, the confusion from the original garage stemmed from them believing it was the dual mass flywheel as to why it lost drive and they were just to about to take the gearbox out when one of them noticed the driveshaft on the lift, the second garage don't inspire much confidence either as it seems to be becoming a little bit hit and miss with them too, as it stands at the moment with them they tried to replace n/s driveshaft which made no difference so took new one out and put old in which saved some money and have now ordered a new o/s driveshaft to see if the first garage fitted the correct size, there reasoning for this is that the new one seems very rigid with absolutely no play cv to cv in it whatsoever, I got under the lift with them and you can clearly see the old n/s moves a couple of mm and the o/s is butt tight, I've said to them I'll pay whatever it takes to fix but the frustrating thing is nobody knows what it is, head and brick wall spring to mind

Hi thanks for reply, I think the shaft had been running loose as when the original garage took it off they said it was in pieces and were surprised it was still moving, could this have damaged the diff?, as it stands at the moment the original n/s shaft has tiny amount of cv to cv play in it and the o/s shaft is rock solid, I know this as I was under the lift with the mechanic when he showed me,

If the OS shaft has no axial play then it will be hammering the diff flange and bearings in the gearbox as the suspension travels up and down. best get it sorted asap.
