So, I wasn't too worried about the alarm errors as that could have been me earlier in the year accidently setting alarm off and turning the interior sensors off.... anyway I have just refitted a new vw epb switch, rescanned and cleared the errors.

Turned the ignition on and I am still getting the epb error light come up on the dash and the dis saying to consult handbook etc, so I did a rescan and every error barring this one had disappeared:

So, I went to ross tech error code wiki and discovered this:
    02845 - Ross-Tech Wiki

02845 - Function Display in Instrument Cluster (!): Short to Ground

    Possible Symptoms

    • Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) ON
    • Red Brake light or Electro-Mechanical Parking Brake (EPB) light ON
    • Auto-Hold function in Electro-Mechanical Parking Brake (EPB) disabled

    Possible Causes

    • When found in the Electro-Mechanical Parking Brake (EPB) control module this may be caused to a software problem as noted below.

    Possible Solutions

    • When found in the [53] - Parking Brake control module on the VW Passat or VW Passat CC RoW (Rest of World) vehicles would refer to TPI 2021874

I tried googling TPI 2021874 but it just sent me to a thread on this site about different error codes...but obviously all within the epb module

So, wondering what my next move should be, has anyone any ideas?

    Cheers

Might need a software update via VAS (VW dealer or independent with VAS diagnostic equipment). VAS is able to connect to the "Mothership" in Germany whereas VCDS cannot.

RichardSEL has a lot of dealings with software updates. Mine was updated at the same time the injectors were replaced under recall.

Yer im thinking after reading around its software...but, being pessimistic im expecting it to need a new ecu...will ring vw in morning and see if they can reflash....just a bit of a gamble as if it does need a new ecu, then the extra cost of the reflash will be a waste

The re-flash is one hour at an indie. My VW dealer wanted two. But with a CC you shouldn't need it as you've got 3C0 907 801 J. That would've been re-written from manufacture to avoid the "False DTCs" problem (in reality it provided more protection for the switching transistors in the EPB module that had originally been under-rated). But that's in reference to the earlier TPI 2015075 that covers my '06MY B6 Passat. (I can send you that if you PM me again your email address) I have the same module as you, but after the two stage flash on mine ended up at version "GX"

For the TPI 2021874 VW do get very possessive nerdy about their TPIs, especially over here. The only way to be kept uptodate as a lowly member of the public is by subscribing to Erwin. But then you'd only get the NAR ones. There's many US ones for download cultivated by the moderator of VW Vortex forum nater. But his list only goes up to 2009. See:
VWVortex.com - ****Official B6 TSB Thread - Every TSB .pdf is inside!**** (Links work)

To see whether there's a recall outstanding for your car enter your VIN into:
UK: (Safety recalls only) Check for Safety Recalls : Volkswagen UK
    NAR (Recalls & Service Lookup):
VW Recalls | Service Campaigns | Volkswagen

See whether this clears your outstanding EPB fault reporting:

    0. Turn parking brake off. EPB button unlit
    1. Select control module address [53 - Parking Brake]
    2. Select [Basic settings - 04] and use Group 006
    3. Listen carefully, and you should hear the EPB close. When it closes you'll see Basic Settings at the top of your screen say "ON"
    4. Click [Done], [Go Back] Then [Basic Settings - 04] and use Group 010. This performs a function test on the EPB which will cycle a number of times. When it's done Basic Settings at the top of your screen will show "ON"
    5. Click [Done], [Go Back], then [Fault Codes - 02] If each procedure's completed correctly you should see "No Fault Codes Found"
    6. Cycle the EPB a few times to ensure all's now working correctly

Post what Module 53 now reads?

    Hi Richard,

I am fast becoming aware that you are the 'oracle' lol i bet there is not much you don't know about passats lol

I came across erwin the other night and bookmarked it for if I ever attempted repairs, would be worth a few euros to read through and print off some info

I also found your post about the flashing issue and the modules affected re B and G iirc...I took a little solace from knowing mine isn't one of those specifically affected, but still understand the ecu as being sensitive all the same to low voltages etc etc

I did a recall check via vw site soon after buying the car and again just a few days ago...nothing came up so that is something I suppose lol

Brilliant stuff, many thanks for the suggestion of cycling the functions etc, I will give that a go and report back...at this stage anything that may prevent a very costly repair is always welcome...thank you for the help and suggestions

p.s, i have an estate not a cc...I dont think that will make any difference but just mentioned in case

    Hi Richard,

Well, just done the above suggested steps in vcds and immediately hit an issue. Group 6 when inputted and hitting go comes up with error not available, so tried group 10 to do the function test and that worked perfectly, came out ran a scan, cleared the faults, reran the scan after cycling epb on and off via switch a few times and error remains

I have taken a couple of vids to show the procedure and to record the sound of the epb motors cycling on and off...unsure if any use, but they both sound to be cycling on and off fine, yet group 6 non availability would presumably be commensurate with an issue?

Also, unsure if the voltage readings during function test is correct, they were both at 0 (despite unfocused pic but you didn't miss anything) and only registered voltage right at the end...is that normal?

Just a vid to relay the sound of the motors cycling on and off via epb switch

    Quick update,

managed to find a local-ish indy garage, they are going to do a scan with their gear for 25, they've quoted 450 for epb ecu supply n fit which I thought was quite good, but he didn't seem to think it would be that, more like the motor/calipers...anyway, let them have a look and they can sort it out...can't handle error codes and warning lights, need it sorting

Fingers crossed, they get it sorted first time and its not a case of chase the fault

There's just so much good info, a lot of it spread across may sites on the interweb, that I collect the most useful and sub them into .docs.
Started with headunits (coz I got sold with my '06MY at one year old a sad RCD500 without MP3 or Bluetooth. This on the so-called fully loaded SEL) And it kinda went from there. Still, beats amateur radio or stamp collecting. Must get out more...
Not an oracle or sage. I'll leave that to those who are/have been mechanics and give of their experience in here for free

I'd be surprised if your remaining fault is the EPB module itself. But, if there's been a EPB motor fault for some time, then it's not unknown for it to take down the controller eventually.

As you've now got the full VCDS genuine and registered, try Ross-Tech's own forum? It's a fast track into Ross-Tech's own one-year from purchase free advice centre run from their own server:
    Ross-Tech Forums
There's Ross-Tech's own sponsored public forum at:
    VAG-COM Diagnostic Forum
Both will need your full Autoscan for authentication
    Or email:
    support@ross-tech.com
I've given them this thread's URL in case they can answer here.

If they don't know the answer to why you're getting nothing in Group 6 then noone will. If you've retracted and opened the EPB several times without lock-up then that does indicate there's no motor fault either. The low voltage you're registering (11.7, 12.1V) could indicate a wiring or plug fault. Have you actually had the wheels off to see whether there's a crack lengthwise along either of the EPB motors? I've given them this thread's URL in case they can answer here.

If you can hang on to your £450 for a little longer, let's see if spending that can be avoided?

    Hi Richard,

That degree of organisation can only be praised, it is something I aspire to but doubtful I'd achieve...I think I will start trying myself though, will prove to be a very useful repository of information. LOL Stamp collecting and radio, perhaps you could combine getting out more by going hilltop dx'ing (or whatever the technical name is) lol

The guy I spoke to at the garage sounded taken aback when I mentioned the ecu, he said much more likely to be the motor/caliper

You know, I never even considered asking ross tech for help/further info, good shout, I will register on the forum and see if they can shed any light...and wow, thank you very much for your help and thought to share this thread, that is really very much appreciated, thank you very much Richard.

Yer the fact the brakes engage and disengage every time (upto now fingers crossed and wood touched) is what was pushing me towards the ecu, but of course, as you say, there could be any number of issues along the braking system that perhaps would lead to the issues experienced

I haven't had the wheels off yet, I will take them off over the weekend and see if I can spot any immediately apparent issues with the motors.

Thanks for your help, you have been brilliant

So just to update for anyone else with the same faults:

Dropped car off at garage this morning, they've just rang to say it is the epb ecu that's gone...Might help others pin down the same fault going off the vagcom codes etc
