    Hey,

Hope everyone's cool. I'm wondering if anyone else has had this issue or can help me out with it. I've got a MK5 Golf - 1.9 TDI 2005. BKC engine. About 6 weeks ago the car had issues starting. The first time it had an issue was a long start with the battery and starter cranking but no start. It worked eventually and no issues after that.

At this time I had it scanned and it came up with a glowplug 1 error. Didn't get a chance to change it but it doesn't seem like a glow plug issue. Eventually changed the glowplug.

Then about 4 weeks ago while driving after about 5 - 15 minutes of driving the car just cuts out. The revs drop and engine cuts out straight away. The dash still shows the fuel temp etc. The radio and indicator lights still work in dash.

When I try to restart the car after it doesn't start. Cranks fine but just keeps on cranking. After about 3 - 5 minutes the car starts again. Usually I press the accelerator which seems to help. Then the cars fine for the rest of the journey (motorways/ A-Roads/ In town) anything it's fine for that journey. Then the problem persists the next time I take it out.

The issue then stopped for about 4 weeks and now its started up again. My mate had a spare Maf sensor so changed that over and also cleaned out the throttle body.

The car seems to cut out at junctions and when i'm slowing down and clutching/braking to change down gears. The revs just drop.

The cars had a full service 6 months ago and the fuel pump was also changed at this time by the garage as it was weak and dying so it's got a new fuel pump in there.

The issue sounds electrical related to me as the car isn't jerking or coughing like its not got any fuel when it cuts out.

Had the car scanned a while ago and it wasn't showing any related error codes.

    Hi dajackel

This sounds exactly like the problem I (and hundreds of others) have had but with imported Mitsubishi Pajeros (2.8TD).
When the importing of these vehicles from Japan began in the early 2000s they soon started cutting out after about 5 minutes of driving when approaching a junction. It took a while to restart but then would run fine for the rest of the day. The problem was traced to a diaphragm in the fuel pump that would leak/split due to the lower quality of diesel in this country as opposed to Japan. The diaphragm itself cost 50p but to strip and rebuild the fuel pump cost me £425 back in 2004.

The fact that you have had the fuel pump replaced is too much of a coincidence to me. Was is new or reconditioned? Who did the work, dealers or other?
Does the scan include the fuel pump? If it can be scanned I would concentrate on that or maybe get a fuel pump specialist to take a look.

    Hope this helps.

A quick check is to look at the anti shudder / manifold throttle flap to see if thats stuck shut when it fails to start. I had similar symptomson 1.9 tdi touran. The throttle flap adjusts while driving to regulate egr quantity and shuts when ignition is turned off to let the engine coast smoothly to a stop instead of back kicking on last compression stroke, and mine was sticking shut occassionally, no fault code came up.

usual fault is the main ecu power relay. dry joints develop and cause it to stop.

You have quite a collection of electrical faults and either quite a few components are on their way out or as Zollaf states it could a fault with main ecu power relay and it's causing most if the faults listed (unfortunately the times and fault frequencies are not shown so we can't tell if several faults are happening at the same times). Also an opportunity to check your door looms as the original looms are too short to allow the proper flex needed when opening and closing the doors and wires frequently break at that point.

Hi mate, Thanks for the reply Yeah you could be right, The fuel pump was changed at an independent garage and they said it was a new one. I'll take a look at it this weekend and see if theres any diagnostics that can be done on it. Will keep you updated mate.

Hi mate, i previously cleaned the anti shudder/throttle body out and there was ALOT of gunk in there, I'm going to attempt to take it out of the car this weekend and give it a thorough clean. I thought at the time it was activing abit weird as when I was testing it, it stay open when I put the ignition on (1 turn of the key) and when I turned it off the butterfly would close and then immediately re-open? Should it stay closed once the keys been removed? Next time she cuts out I'll check the position of it. Thanks mate.

Thanks for the reply mate. Do you know which relay this one is? and any ideas of a part number? I'll get this replaced to rule it out.

Hi mate, Thanks for the reply. Yeah there does seem to be quite a few electricial faults. I can confirm that these haven't happened at the same time. The faults have occured over a period of years. The door loom did break a few years back and I had them repaired at the time and it seems to be working fine at the moment but I'll double check them this weekend.

Reading up on several forums it seems quite a few people have issues like this and some people have suggested it may be the Crank/Speed Sensor, Relays, Temp sensor. Any ideas on these?

Thanks for the replies. I will keep this thread updated.

Maybe clear all the faults and then start and run the car if you can then post a new scan of what's left.

Hi, I suggest you replace that pump n make sure you put in the exact one n make sure you get the people that installed it to check it again.
They could start with a pressure test after a long journey.
    Cheers mate

    Hi,

just an update. I had the crank sensor changed for a new one as a few people on the forums said it's the likely culprit, changed brake light switch too and the issue is still there.

Checked the anti shudder/egr vale when it switched off and it seems to be in the open position when trying to start it but it does still have the starting issue once it cuts out.

I noticed that previously when it switched off when I cranked the engine the rpm needle did move but again it took a while to start up. I had to keep pumping the accelerator pedal.

I've noticed that the car cuts off when I'm driving at speed and i switch gears to neutral, the revs just drop. I was going downhill and thought I'd try it, was probably on about 3k rpm in 4th gear downhill, switched to neautral and the revs dropped and it cut off. The battery light came on, I put it back in 4th (while still going downhill) clutched out and started up again so it looks like it does bump start back straight away but it's only if I stop and try to start it normally it takes a while to start up again.

Again sorry for troubling you all this is getting annoying now.

Where should i start looking now? ruled out the crank sensor.

    Thanks
