I'm looking at A5's and have noticed some have the buttons low down and others have them where you would normally expect the stereo controls.
I'm guessing this depends on what else is on the car but what is the difference in spec that moves the buttons.

    Cheers Des

I think it's to do with whether it's a facelift model or not. The wife has them down by the gear stick but the pre facelift model we tested didn't. Not seen a facelift without them down by the gear stick.

When was the facelift. I've seen a 2012 with the buttons high and a 2010 with the buttons low?

The facelift was 2012. The wife got one of the first ones.

That adds to the confusion as I've seen a 2010 with the buttons by the gear lever.

Does your wife's car have the HDD Nav I think that may be the reason for the move? It's like there is something behind the panel that prohibits the buttons being there.

Yes mate she has the tech pack high which has hdd nav. It may be something to do with that then but couldn't tell you for certain.

Yup, the HDD satnav is the reason that the buttons surround the gear stick
