    Hi

I've got a 2000 VW Beetle and I had the steering rack replaced just over 6 months ago. I was told the seals had blown causing an awful grinding noise when I turned the steering wheel on a full lock. However, I've since had issues with my airbag warning light remaining on.

I've had the slip ring replaced twice as the garages have diagnosed a failed slip ring. As the light has come on yet again I'm starting to feel that something could be wrong with the steering rack which is causing faults with the slip ring. Any ideas as this is getting rather expensive now?

    Thanks

i doubt its the rack as this is not connected to the airbag system.

Hi thanks for this. I can't understand why the slip ring would have failed twice in the last 4 months without some sort of pressure causing it to fail. There were no problems before the steering rack was replaced.

did it fail immediately after the rack was fitted. all that can happen really is that the steering wheel was rotated whilst the rack was off and this has affetcted it. the rack bolts to the subframe so cant really be fitted wrong.

Hi. The steering did not feel the same after the rack was replaced but the garage advised that it was ok. The slip ring apparently failed a month afterwards, which was identified when the garage were replacing my indicator stalk. They couldn't turn the airbag light off so they said they replaced the slip ring. The airbag and ESP lights kept off for a few weeks before coming on again. They replaced the slip ring but within weeks it came back on. I took my car to a dealership who diagnosed the fault as a failed slip ring and they replaced it. The airbag light lit up again after 2 miles then the ESP light came on.

Unfortunately yes. Originally a high street autocentre did the work. As they were unable to resolve their mishaps I had to resort to taking it to the dealership but I've still got the same issue, the lights are still on.
