Does the bog standard satnav come with traffic alerts and offer diversion re-routing? Can't find anything online about the specifics of the unit.

As Bash says it comes with TMC and dynamic re-routing, but that is of course limited to major roads. Whne in navigation mode you can also ask it avoid a piece of the route for a given distance forcing it re-route even if it does not believe there is congestion

How do you force it reroute like if there's an accident ahead and you want to avoid the next 1 mile etc?
just being lazy and not reading the manual but on my 100 mile commute I tried pressing buttons but couldn't find a reroute or avoid button

Top Right soft button when in Navigation mode will take you to the Route menu and that includes an option to ignore the current route for the next specified distance

Realise my comments only relate to the RMC (SD Card) MMI System. On the HDD system select "Tour" (Top LH Soft button) and then select Exclude Route option and then distance

Motorways are all covered by TMC so if you had a route set and also have enabled dynamic traffic avoidance then it would have offered an alternative automatically. This would be case with either system and regardless of whether you have Audi Connect activated on the MMI Plus version
