    Hi,
I'm new to this forum . I've been a die hard VW fan all my life.
Just about saved enough to buy a golf GT sport 2008 170bhp and what a fantastic car it's been up until now.

I let a friend borrow the car and its started to play up, I don't know what he's done but I'm gutted.

Yesteraday, tried starting the car, it took about 10 secs to start. When it did eventually start the revs were high and it smelt of unburnt oil (blue smoke) was apparent when I let go of the gas .I hope he's not knackered the engine, although it has 140000 mls on the clock. I had it plugged in from a mechanic. And the codes that popped up were p0642 and g28.

So the mechanic advised to change the speed sensor for the crank (positioned behind the oil collar housing) which he changed but unfortunately it's still not solved the problem .

Has anyone come across this before, any help would be much appreciated. It's a bmn engine . Pls I need this sorted as I have no car , I've been riding a bike 12 mls each way to work.

check your turbo compressor side oil seal is not passing oil through the turbo into the intercooler and on in to the engine, disconnect one of the turbo compressor air outlet pipes or hoses and check for excessive oil, there's normally a coating of oil on the pipe walls but it should not be running with the stuff.

Many thanks, I'll have a look. Are these compressor air outlet pipes the small pipes near the bulkhead

Blue smoke is a sign of burning oil not unburnt. Check all the wiring looms to ensure they are still intact especially those that run across or above hot engine parts such as the turbo and heat shields. I say this as I had a loom above the turbo slip down and melt to the turbo heat shield after the retaining clip had come off causing a short - the symptoms? - difficult to start, high idle revs, G28 speed sensor fault code (a random fault it seems due to the short circuit). Once I reinsulated the wires that were bare and rewrapped the loom (positioning it away from the heat shield) everything was back to normal, starting first time, perfect revs and no fault codes. Mine is also a 170 but in Passat form with a BMR engine which is similar.

    Hth.

I appreciate the help, will definitely be looking around the turbo are and hot parts to see if anything is burnt. As per the blue smoke, it's apparent from the minute it starts till fully warm. Constant.

Could be injector seals, valve stem seals or worn piston or oil scraper rings if the blue smoke goes away when warm as all expand when hot sealing any small leaks which return when the engine cools and the parts contract. I get blue smoke on start up which is very common on a higher mileage TDI (I'm at 158K) but it goes almost immediately. There is also a chance the tandem pump gasket is leaking a little oil as they are known to go.

just dropped the car to VRT. in slough, they're a VW specialist . Hopefully fingers crossed they can shed some light on it. The loom from the ecu to the crank sensor etc seems to have been spliced by the ecu, and reconnected by the G28 sensor. I hope they can fix this. Im pretty sure this is a wiring issue. The mechanic there said the smoke could be due to the crank sensor not working .
