Open the bonnet in the car, look below windscreen and remove plastic trim by taking off wiper blades.

This is called the " scuttle" area.

There is a drain hole right in the middle below battery, take battery out and prod with long screwdriver and you will feel the hole if there is water in there.

It will be full of leaves and debris from the road.

Try and gently use a hose to wash all the rubbish out of the scuttle and then replace the cover and wiper blades.

Then run hose all over windscreen and then check for leaks and report back

This gives you an insight into what I am saying.

Do it first and report back. You might not have to remove the wiper blades, I cannot remember !

I fixed a similar problem on a C5, and the water was getting in from around the seal for the pollen filter, similar to the issue on this Passat Water Leak , Bolk head

definitely something to do with the air as it doesnt leak when the air con is turned off, though saying that it does leak when the car is turned off and ive had the air con running. hopefully learn something when i can get it on a four post lift and unblock the drains from underneath.

Sounds like its doing what it says on the tin except drain is going wrong direction as you already know.
You could look under the bonnet / car after a drive with a/c on, and when dribble is evident inside have a look and see if there is any hint of any dribbles under car or possibly on steering gear etc. If not gently press the insulation material inwards in general location of drain. This may be enough to open mouth of drain which sometimes stick closed

all sorted, evaporator drain it was. i left it with local mechanics who charged me an hour for going at it from under the carpet and pulling the drain out from that end. sorted for £48.
