    Hi
I'm Brian and new to this site. I've had a 1998 A4 for nearly a year now and it's been great. Unfortunately I've just discovered a nasty water leak from the O/S of the engine somewhere above the A/C compressor and below the turbo. I can't see where it's comming from and there doesn't seem to be a hose around there or much room either. Are there any core plugs in the area? Or any other ideas. I don't think it can be the head gaskit as the water comes out too quickly (engine cold and not running).
    Regards
    Brian

    HI
I've identified the source of the leak in my 1998 A4. It's comming from the core plug above the starter motor. My question is; what's the best way to attack it, and what do I need to remove to make access easier? Any help would be appreciated.
    Regards
    Brian

    Hi Brian,
Basic method for core plug removal is to drive a large screwdriver into it and prise out taking care not to damage the edge of the machined hole.
To fit the new plug, clean and dry the hole and apply sealer. Push the plug into the hole (curved side out) and gently hammer with a suitable drift to spread the plug tightly into the hole. Don't overdo it (when the plug is nearly flat is more than enough).
    Good luck

    Hi Bugbear
Thanks for the reply. Let me re-phrase the question. What is the best way to gain access to this plug? Will I have enough room if i just remove the starter motor, or will I need to remove other items like the engine mounting, or turbo. I have replaced core plugs many years ago, and seem to remember that they need more than a little tap; you need enough room to swing the hammer and it all looks a little tight in there.
    Regards
    Brian

If you are familiar with the process Brian then only you will know when there is enough room to swing that hammer. I've done them (when space has been a problem) by using an old half-inch drive socket extension (12") and a socket slightly smaller than the core-plug.
