On a 30 grand car 1% of it's value to have it serviced properly with a dealers stamp doesn't seem outrageous to me.

It does to me. Not sure on the relevance of the price of car? Is your oil and filter significantly more expensive?

My first long life service quote was £373 in Sheffield (£423 at Milton Keynes near work) and I got an independent quote for £180. I promised to take my car to the independent for brakes etc and he was happy to write me a quote. Audi Sheffield price matched on the day. I didn't tell them before I booked it in, I just showed them the quote on the day and they matched it.

It does have relevance. How many people build a house and use clear plastic for windows instead of glass, both would work. I know people that wouldn't touch a car that didn't have full main dealer service history, that can take a sizeable chunk off resale value. The guy with the £67.00 quote was going to wreck your engine, probably pumping 15w-40 oil from a 45 gallon drum.

Yes, you're right, these independent specialists are real cowboys. Usually set up by people with 20-30 years experience at a dealer for the brand they are specialising in. How could they possibly know as much as the 22 year old servicing your car at Audi?

Plus, as Audi price match, you can have both, I did. The parts quoted from the independent were the same, with the product codes listed on the quote, the only difference was £45 per hour labour, as opposed to £160 at Audi. You're not paying for their skills or training at that price, you're paying in part for some of the equipment used, but mainly for the super swanky dealership building that they're based in.

Oh, and the army of meeters and greeters, receptionists, service managers, booking in clerks, valeters etc. All of which are vital to make sure your oil and filter is correctly changed?!?!

Lol you are so so correct.
Made me smile, I am buying the car because it is a quality well made product not because there are flunkeys serving up starbucks while I wait in the free wifi reception area to be presented with my extortionate bill for half an hours work.

I suspect the dealer gets parts at quite a discount and the fact they offer the price match means they will still make a profit… just not quite as much.

Probably the same everywhere, but at Glasgow Audi they have a guy at the entrance to c̶h̶e̶c̶k̶ ̶y̶o̶u̶’̶r̶e̶ ̶w̶o̶r̶t̶h̶y point you in the right direction. Then two (sometimes three) people outside the main doors. One guy takes your keys and videos the car, the other parks it up. Then you have a receptionist to direct you to the servicing agent. Another at the cafe and a floater checking everyone is ok (might be a second receptionist?).

I’m sure Audi will have run surveys and focus groups to prove it’s what customers want, but it really puts me off. Even someone who actually likes being pampered must realise this is excessive? I’m guessing the workshop is understaffed by comparison which explains the lengthy wait for an appointment… front of house certainly isn’t busy.

I took Audi Complete service and maintenance as it looked like I would break even (at worst), but my first oil service would have cost £280 and a set of front wipers would have been £80 so with a full service in a year and brakes in the future etc. I should be well ahead… at Audi prices anyway

To be fair, most people rolling around in a 30K+ car probably wouldn't be that bothered by the price and would typically be a sales trauler.. so those are easy cash cows.

Good on you for being thrifty.

I've had a bitter experience when I paid for a £60 oil change as doctle said. Lost my big end bearing and the head got cracked about 100 miles later.

After that drama, i decided that as an engineer I should be able to repair my own car. Done that more or less (bar tools) ever since. Average oil change costs me about £60 each time.

And I must admit that for this reason, I eventually opted for an oil change and Inspection (saving £100 by having them done together) got and got £50 off by just asking, at an Audi Main Dealer. As my wife said "That's the most expensive car wash we have ever had!". LOL!

Interesting debate and some really good points made. I even accept the "you paid a lot for a car, expect to pay a lot to maintain it" argument. I just don't like to feel I am being ripped off.

    Michael.

Why the hell is there still perception that garages will rip you off? They don't. Sure you'll get the odd garage that will rip you off but very seldom will it be a main dealer or good indie. Reputation is a big part of the motor industry and nobody wants a reputation as a rip off merchant.
I believe this idea comes from tight fisted people. A guy with a £30k car obviously has a fairly decent job in order to pay for it and I'm sure he considers himself worth all he earns. Same guy will bitch about the price of oil or whine because you didn't change his brake fluid FOC or charged for a diagnostic scan. Perhaps garages should do servicing and repairs at cost of materials plus a penny and a bag of cheap sweets.
