Leon FR 1.9 TDI 150 gearbox sticking in 1st gear

Won't know for sure about single mass flywheel until gearbox off

So today it has not really got stuck in 1st gear apart from when pulling up on the drive to stop. So I left it it the stuck 1st gear position and with the clutch down switched off the engine. With engine of the gear came out smoothly like it should. Does that mean it's a clutch issue rather than a gearbox ?

Yep I'm still going with clutch or master cylinder problem, not sure if the leon is the same but a lot of the caddy/touran etc had an issue where the clutch master cylinder used to break the plastic rod that connected to the clutch pedal which gave similar symptoms.

Ok I will have a check to see if the clutch pedal seems ok and the rod, I've experienced golf mk4 with broken clutch pedals

Gearbox off and clutch looks ok nothing broken on it and not worn. Flywheel is dual mass Sachs and is Sachs clutch kit

so must be a broken gearbox

It's probably the clutch slave cylinder as that is a common fault on these cars. I had this intermittently for about 3 years, sometimes it wouldn't go in gear and sometimes wouldn't come out of gear, when it got far less intermittent I could put my foot down on the clutch and it would creep forward as if the clutch wasn't fully depressed. Try changing clutch fluid first, then gearbox oil then master cylinder as these are easier than the slave cylinder which is inside the gearbox casing and requires gearbox removal.
