    Hi Everyone,

I am the very proud owner of a brand new Golf Match manual with the 1.4 TSI 125ps engine. (its so good even my tech/car phobic wife loves driving it!)

Before making a purchase I was trying to discover what VED band the car was in and was struggling to find a definitive answer anywhere (I think because its a new engine)

Am pleased to discover now VW have sent me the V5 that its a band C engine so is only £30 a year VED - ok when you spend north of 18k on a car that's not a huge saving but still a nice boon.

It was on the VW site somewhere but it took some finding - I had the same question. The VW site claims the manual 1.4 is band D, the DSG I have is band C (confirmed on my V5). Better still for bands A-D engine is that there is no first year tax at all. I'm puzzled by the bhp - on my V5 it states 90kw which is 120.7bhp. On the VW site it says tbc - I was told by me dealer that the engine output was increased from 122 to 125 bhp at some stage last year. It all seems to be a bit of a muddle. Any idea on how to confirm the definitive output?

    My V5 says 92KW (=125ps).

Its funny that precise details are so hard to find or are different dependent on sourece - I had expected to be in Band D as the documentation for for the 122ps 1.4 manual says 121 g/km and I thought it unlikely that would change in the 125.

Also want to check if it definitely has the independent rear suspension - anyone know if I can look for any give-aways under the car? (dont laugh!).

I've looked at the latest May 2015 price guide and some things have changed - both the manual and DSG are now the same band - C - and it shows 125bhp (so VW's website is inconsistent with the printed data). As for independent rear suspension - good question!

Engine changed to 125ps on the Model Year 16 production, if your car missed the Build Week transition to MY16 then you'll have the 122ps.

As for the rear suspension, as I understand it anything 122ps and above gets the multi link.

Definitely have the MY16 car unless I have being mis-sold by VW - as it was a standard build in a common colour I got lucky and nabbed it when it was at German port.

Engines 122ps and above get the independent multi link suspension, below 122ps gets torsion beam.

Spooky! Do you have the new infotainment units (MIB2) as well? If so then defo MY16. I believe the main difference is increase in screen size from 5.8 to 6.5.

    Error on V5?

Screen appears to be 6.5 inches - also seems to have the new Infortainment firmware (cause it has more icons for DAB stations - I have being spending more time on VW forum than I should be!!)

Also a view of the rear suspension - looks like multi link to my untrained eye:

Thanks for the pic, but I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between one type of suspension and another, I'm not at all mechanically minded! I'm just a nerd who reads a lot of car websites/forums....

Re the MY16 issue, it does sound like you have it, so the engine output is a bit of a mystery. I guess it's either an error on the V5 or the factory were using up 122ps engines in the first MY16 builds? I don't know how you would verify it though, have you asked your dealer?
