Hi guys, I'm new the v dub scene and just bought yesterday my mrs a 2.0 gti on a 99 model, the car is mint and we love it, we done 6-7 mile in it yesterday and now its starting mis firing, took it to the local garage this morning mechanic said instantly there known for burning oil, so he plugged it in and its said number 4 pot, upon doing this noticing all spark plugs looked new, so continued to remove number 4 spark plug and it was caked in crappy oil, instantly he's said its burning oil head needs to be removed to to all seals etc etc, does this all sound correct ?,

All advice would be appreciated as we only had car 2 days and we love it and want to keep it

I'd suggest you find yourself a VAG Indie, these cars need to be fixed by someone that knows them. Plenty of small garages just throw parts at them willy nilly. Hopefully you'll get it fixed at a reasonable cost

You wouldn't believe what happened in the end. The garage I took it to was a vw specialist, as I said he had me convinced that the head had to come off at one point he even suggested to strip it down and sell parts as wheels worth a few quid and doors and interior, however he cleaned that number 4 plug up and I proceeded to drive home with it running back fine,, my mrs took it out for a spin soon after I got back surely enough she soon came home saying its running lumpy again, so I drove it over to local motorists discount and got half way there and car suddenly sorted itself again, bought a coil pack fitted straight away and had no problems since,

just read this and was going to say coilpack, as they are a known weakness on any vag from this era. i am amazed that this vag specialist said it was a burning oil issue. of course the plug will be black if its been missing, thats carbon, thats all. oh well, you know where not to take it to in future. i don't suppose he was after you wheels in the first place was he ?
