I have just bought a A4 and it has the 1.9TDI PD engine with 104k on it and i was told this was a very good engine and it wont give me any trouble. Is this right because i have seen so many of the 2.0 TDI with oil pump failure.

Alex, a 98 Golf 3 TDI would not have a PD engine, it is VEP.

John, yes the 1.9 is fine and in fact oil pump failure on the 2 litre balancer shaft engine is not a big as a problem as internet scaremongers would have you believe.

Great thanks for that info. I was told its a common issue with oil pumps on the 2.0TDi and over the last 6 months i have seen 3 cars come in with the oil light on red and knocking bad. There is a VW specialist not far from where i work so i called them and they told me they see lots of these engines with pump failure so they now find it better to replace the engine and turbo rather that a rebuild because it costs much more. It could well be down to there being lots of these cars in my area as to why they see so many and i would probably guess that if the service history was up to date then there would be a lot less people suffering with this issue.
