Yesterday our 2002 MY cut out dead, and wouldn't restart or tow start. VCDS dug out 3 fault codes - 01318 control module for injection pump no comms, 01268 quantity adjuster faulty, and 17978 engine start blocked by immobiliser.

Cleared codes and the 01268 comes back every time I attemped to start. I cracked open the injector pipes, and LOADS of fuel came out, checked this with VCDS, and the starting IQ was 78mg/st! These pumps max out at around 50mg/st, and the starting IQ should be around 2.5mg/st. So, looks like the pump is toast.

According to VCDS, this pump is adapted to the immobiliser can anyone confirm this from part nos.? (0470506033 & 059 130 106 L). The 2002 MY was change over from IMMO2 to IMMO3, so could be either, but think it's IMMO3.

According to Ross-tech, I need the pin number for MY car, can anyone confirm I only need this pin, and not the one from the donor car also?
I now have a second hand pump with the same part number, but no log in pin numbers for either car. I just want to be 100% clear on what I need to do before booking an auto locksmith to extract my car's pin number for me.

The replacement pump has done 180,000 miles, is this a ticking time bomb for future failure, and is it worth have the old one refurbished? Has anyone attempted to repair a VP44?

If you decide to have your pump overhauled, Diesel Bob has a good reputation with the VP44, on the plus side you won't need a PIN.

2nd gen. AKE. The pump have immo. 78mg. only means the blip valve is not moving, probably a short in the wires to the quantity adj. meaning the pump ECD is shot

Well, got a locksmith to extract the immo pin this morning, fitted the second hand pump, adapted it, and she fired up after 10 seconds of cranking
Warmed up to 85 degrees, cheched timing and it's virtually spot on at 1.8 ATDC, so no adjustment needed.
Took it for a test drive, and it drives loads better than before - pulls hard, as against power dropping off after a couple of seconds and then coming back on, then dropping off.
It's done this for 5 years or so, I though it was a turbo issue, as it was showing up in the VCDS logs as unstable boost, so thought it was a turbo or N75 problem. The boost must have been dropping due to fuel IQ dropping. So must have been a long term issue with the quantity adjuster.
If this starts happening on the replacement pump, this time I'll change it before it breaks down half way along an overtaking manouver!

A week and a half after changing the pump, the car has gained even more power! It must be burning the cats and turbo clear of soot.

Hi, sorry to dig up an old -ish thread...
When you say "Well, got a locksmith to extract the immo pin this morning" I guess the pump had to be connected to the car?
Also what did you mean by "adapted it" when talking about the second hand pump.

    I have a similar problem...
2005 A4 2.5 TDi cabriolet. One morning wouldn't start. Long story short, VP44 knackered - worn with many faults - £140 worth of diagnosis!
I can get a second hand pump easy enough, its just getting it to work, with this car.
Guessing "immo" is immobilizer code maybe?

So I am thinking, attach old pump to car electrically; read out immo code; fit new pump..... then?

    Thanks in advance
    Simon

Old pump doesn't need to be in the car, as the immobiliser pin is extracted from the insrument cluster.
New pump is matched as follows....

    Wow,
    thanks for that.

I'd seen references to the Ross-tech web site, but hadn't read that far - obviously - DOH!

I'm guessing this is what the 'locksmith' did, or did you use the shareware version of VCDS for this?

VCDS cannot extract pin numbers, you need specialist software, the stuff car 'clockers' and locksmiths use to do an EPROM dump from the instrument cluster to find and decode the cars pin, or 'secret key code'
Once you have the pin, VCDS can then perform any IMMO work - matching ECU's, Matching new and old keys, and matching pumps etc etc.
BUT, a shareware version of VCDS has very limited functions, so cannot do any of the above. Look at Rosstech website to find out what version you will need, I'm not sure if VCDS Lite can do this either.
