I don't think so, as you need access to the belt, tensioner and timing bolts.

The code (or pin) can be read from the old fuel pump. I changed the VP44 this year and I sent both the old and the new pump (also second hand) to a VP44 specialist, he checked the new fuel pump and decoded it using the data from the old fuel pump. The replacement pump cost me 300 euro. There are several types of VP44 pumps for the 2.5 TDi, the difference is in the letter next to the number 106. Mine was J.

My VP44 died by my mistake. I shifted from 1st to 4th by mistake and the pump died. When I opened the hood, there was burning smell, the pump electronics was dead. The pump was probably gonna die soon, I just speeded things up. The same thing apparently can happen when you climb a tall sidewalk with no throttle pressed, so be careful.

So are we saying here that if the engine is suddenly prevented from turning (stalled) this can damage the pump. If so, that seems like a bit of poor design. It's also, presumably, much more relevant to manual transmission. I have an allroad auto and, pretty much as you'd expect, it is content to bump up kerbs (assuming this is what you mean by climb the sidewalk) with the engine idling and if the kerb is too tall it will just wait, with the engine continuing to idle, until you press the accelerator.

Yes, it is poor design, or at least that's how the pump specialist explained it to me.
