What did he scan with? VAG cars don't always work well with OBD scan tools, has it had a fuel filter recently?

Has the DPF light been on, does it regenerate? Has it had any work done recently?

drive the car to a quiet bit of road, drive the car in 2nd gear for a few hundred yards and keep the revs hard down to just under the red and blast out all the crap in the exhaust. You need to do this once in a blue moon.

    Also change the diesel filter

When you turn on ignition, always wait for the glow plugs light to go out before starting. It sounds like the glow plugs have gone
