OK so have given up trying to find an A4 3.0TDI is Scotland for the amount of cash I have, so been looking at A6 3.0 TDI Quattro's and warming too the idea, I have found two cars both 05 one an avant with 91,0000 miles service history whith all the toys , the other a saloon with full MDSH with 107,000 miles fully loaded looks stunning as dose the avant, so been doing a bit of reading and just like all cars some real scarry story's out there with timing chains, rattles, crank pulleys, injector failure, water ingress, and this is why owners forums are so good, so what is everyone's thoughts about these two cars, regarding mileage etc, I have not seen the cars in the flesh yet but the garage that is selling them has presented them very well over the net, just trying to get pointers in the right direction, because I not sure I can afford a 2007 A6, again thank you for any input about my questions, oh and just to say sold my A4 today for £500 more than garages were giving me for a trade in agents £6000/£7500 cars, not loads more but every little helps.

    Marcus

My experience on looking for and buying a 3.0 quattro TDi was that the selection available is less than half in the colder months than the warmer ones and winter stays longer north of the border!

Hence the reason purchased mine at the peek of Summer (?) on 1st August 2012, back then a sub 80k 07 saloon was had for £8.5k and apart from a few niggley little things no significant spend as yet.

So potentially leave it for a couple of months (if possible) and look more seriously then.

That said I am in an enviable position of having both a all weather A6 with a set of winter wheels, and something a little nicer for Summer (profile pic).

I don't regret the decision to buy for a moment

    Good luck

Ok I have a bit more info about these two cars, the A6 3.0TDI Quattro saloon reg January 2005 has 107,000 with a full history 5 of which are from a Audi franchise the others are independent and BMW garage......... But should I be worried its had 7 owners, is this the norm or is it a warning of impending troubles ahead ????? The Avant 3.0 TDI again an 05 reg august 05 has 91,000 with a partial service history, your thoughts and opinions greatly received as I have booked the train for tomorrow and off to test and look at them both. Pros and cons Avant over saloon ? the saloon with 5 audi service stamps is it likely that the gear box oil and ecu control box have been done during one of these said services ? The Avant with 91,000 with partial history and only 4 owners , why is it so hard to make up ones mind, so tomorrows the big day any info and or input would be good to help me with a Ya or a nay. thanks.

On the tiptronic I've seen more jerking when changing down to 3rd and 2nd, most of mine went away after a tranny fluid and filter change at 88k miles, audi claim that the gearbox is 'sealed for life' but weirdly they only warranty the gearbox for 80k miles Most recommend the fluid/filter change at around the 80k, and some specialists recommend not changing if the box has done over 100k.

I would recommend a full VCDS scan prior to purchasing any VAG car, and if the seller objects walk away.

That said the car is eerily economical and have just done 350 miles averaging 46mpg, albeit the 320 motorway miles were done at silly-o'clock with minimal traffic...so still have over half a tank left

Oh, defo go for a 2007 or later as those have the later/more reliable injectors.

I'd not touch a 7 owner car, mine had two prior to me.

Appreciate that the A6 C6 saloon has (IIRC) the largest boot of the audi range, even larger than that on the A8 9then or now)!

If you have teenage children then the Avant, but as mine are not yet in their teens the saloon was for me.

I appreciate that you're car-less atm, but can you not buy an old banger and save up for another few months....then you'll be buying in Summer and hopefully lower prices.

The Avant will be for me next as you can even fit two mountain bikes standing up in the boot...for now I use a towbar mounted bike rack

The timing chain issue is with early cars pre 2007. If it rattles at start up for a few seconds this can be a sign. Gearbox should be smooth and the changes hardly noticeable although they do suffer from hesitation at take off and occasional clunky changes. There's a company in Glasgow who do fluid changes including torque converter flush so you are pretty close if you want it done. It won't have been done by the dealer under normal servicing. I like the saloons but the Avants can be easier to sell. Huge boot in the saloon.
I would be very wary of a part service history as that is one of the main causes of chain and turbo failure apparently.
    Tyres should be matching.
Don't jump in as there will be other cars. Also don't be put off by the stories-my one had 130,000 on it when I traded it in and was running brilliantly.

By the way, are you doing enough miles to justify the diesel. You might be lucky enough to find a petrol for a good price.

I would personally stay Clear of both cars. One doesn't have proof it's been properly serviced and the other has had 7 owners.Neither sound tempting to me.And on top of that they're both 05 reg.Your definitely better off saving a bit more cash for an 07 onwards.Either way good luck with your car purchase.....just don't rush it.
