A couple of people on gumtree will come and hook up VCDS for 30quid.

Can someone help me confirm the disc/pad combo?
Can I confirm the right size from chassis number or is model and year enough?

Googleing seems to suggest they are 300mm dia 1m thick solid disc

There are several sizes - you need to measure the disc size which will give you pad size as well. Rears are solid.
I've gone for Pagid discs and pads on the front and must say I'm not impressed (noisy and poor stopping performance when hot). Saying that, I doubt you'll noticed if just doing rears.

Once you've changed pads use VCDS to alter pad thickness for parking brake.

I thought VCDS a was needed during the change to hold off the park brake?

Quick question: Do the rear pistons simply press back in or do they need winding in? I had the caliper off (after using VCDS with a battery charger connected) and the piston wouldn't move while trying to press it in?

They are wind ins - do not push in otherwise you'll damage the thread.
    Clockwise wind in.

So having completed the rear brakes (and needing to cut both discs off), it turns out the brake calipers are just push in and don't require winding.

I also noticed one of my shocks is leaking.....

If you've just pushed them back without winding them in you've knackered something. Rear calipers on ALL cars with a handbrake need winding back - its how the mechanism works. If you park on a hill, you may find your car at the bottom when you get back.

Cutting discs off sounds a bit extreme as well!
