Darts? Fitted to Growlers? Blooming ‘eck Crasher that would turn them into whistling wheelbarrows (Armstrong Whitworth Argosy’s ) An old pal used to fly the Shack. Did you know they can fly (straight and level, no sixty degree banks if you please) with three engines shut down Crasher? Nimrods used to shut two engines down to extend patrol times

How about borrowing the engines off the A400M Atlas? That could work. The first one of these new transports flew over our house the other day, lovely noise! The RAF now have a pair based at Brize. I think they plan to buy 20 or so (not enough, as they will replace the C130J Hercules fleet in 2022)

73% foreign engines on a Shack, heaven forbid! The Dart is an archaic design being a centrifugal compressor but it is incredibly reliable, and British! I can't remember what engine they were going to use on the new Nimrod.

And there was me thinking that they were built by Rolls Royce.

Let's see now Crasher the Nimrod MRA- 4 was due to be powered by a Rolls Royce BR700 series engine. Built in....Wait for it....Germany by BMW-Rolls Royce Deutschland. This engine powers civvie airframes like the Bombardier Global Express, Boeing 717 and Gulfstream V series and oddly the Tupolev Tu-334, I assume these are the ones that are reconditioned examples.

Not a bad spec engine approx 22,000lb thrust (max) from a unit that has a dry weight of 6,155 lbs. So not quite a Trent competitor then, but not a million miles away. Fuel burns not too bad either.

I have happy memories of the old Dart and the Viscount. A small number were kept in the fleet to service the Highland and Island services before the ATP replaced them. A good number of the ATP's bulit now operate out of Bagington (Coventry) as freighters. The ATP's were replaced by 146's for a short time. I think SAAB 3 series do the job nowadays.

There are no volume producers left, all I can think of are no longer owned by us, they are owned by others or have offshore investment companies running 'em. Ok their products might be assembled here, but the profits are going elsewhere. For example Rolls Royce = BMW, Bentley = VAG, Jaguar Land Rover = Tata, MG= a chinese company, Aston Martin= an offshore investment company, not sure who. Even Lotus isn't British owned. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Morgan is no longer owned by it's founding family. Even the iconic london taxi company is now owned by our friends from China.
There's a garage in the village of Tobermore in Northern Ireland that has a Leyland sign on their wall, looks in VGC, perhaps they know something? New Marina? Maxi anyone?

Could not agree more Doctle.....Germany now financially controlling Europe.... where they failed in WW1 and WW2, they have now won the economic war... flood Europe with cheap money as bait, and when it has been swallowed hook line and sinker, reel them in. But they seem to have forgotten their own experiences after WW1, and what "Austerity" policies lead to.....

You'd imagine the those Greeks, the inventors of philosophy, know a thing or two about thinking things through. They seem unfazed by the German lecturing and veiled threats. Obviously the Germans don't have dominoes or they'd know what any 6 year old knows. Stand them in a line and knock one over....Portugal? Spain? Malta.
