Hi guys, I hope there is someone out there who can help me on this. I've tried all sorts (google, phone to gearbox specialists), but no joy so far.

I've got a 2006 A3 Quattro 2.0tdi Sportback 140hp and unfortunately my gearbox has just died. The garage told me they found small chunks of metal in the gearbox oil, and the gearbox is almost certainly beyond repair. With a new gearbox co$$ting around £3000, I'm looking into second-hand options. My gearbox code is FUQ, but I don't seem to be able to find any at the moment. I did find a non-Quattro JLR gearbox and a Quattro JLY gearbox+transfer box.

Do you know if they are compatible? From what I managed to find out so far on the internet, my FUQ and the JLR are both used on 140HP models, while the JLY is used on 170HP models. But all three seem to have the same ratios (ratio final drive I 62:16, ratio final drive II 62:20). Which means they should be compatible? Or is it just my wishful thinking?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The JLR is the same as an FUQ and these both come in the Golf, Passat and Octavia as well. In the Passat the same box has the code KDL and KDP plus the KNV and KDY are theoretically the same and could be made to work with one or two minor changes. The trouble with all these boxes is there are very rare and converting a 2WD to 4WD is not a cost effective as even though the two case halves are the same, the internals are different and the costs of converting would get out of hand. I have to say that I am surprised the garage has dismiss the box as beyond repair without looking inside it, I tend to find the 02Q series is always repairable and normally come out at around £800 from my rebuilder chap.

Thanks. I'll just forget about getting a 2WD one then. Do you know if there's any chance a JLY would fit?

I was also surprised about the 'beyond repair' thing. Apparently they called their gearbox specialist and he said that chunks of metal in the oil almost certainly means kaput.

The JLY and the HCR are the boxes from the 170PS version and should fit without any problem but the 4th and 6th gear ratio's are different and this could compromise the way the car drives.

Thanks, I guess it's FUQ or JLR then as I'm not sure I want to experiment.

I know this is an old post. But just curious if you know what the minor mods are for the knw gearbox to fit and work.

I'm currently gathering all the pieces to retrofit 4 motion into my Passat and bought a gearbox on a quick eBay whim which has turned out to be a kwn one.

Is it better to do the tiny mod or sell on and get a jlr gearbox?

This is the last piece of the puzzle....

    Thanks in advance.

There is a FWZ gearbox on eBay ATM and going from etka it's categorised the same as the JLR gearbox.

Does anyone have any information or knowledge about the FWZ or KNW gearboxes?
