No the steering issue normally needs just a test drive and hard lockl to lock but sometimes you have to do it is basic settings. The correct way to fit the new VW switch is pedal up but earlier they were pedal down and I don't know how they have done theirs.

So if I drive it and turn both ways it should reset itself?

When it is on (which is quite normal after work on the lifts) the first step is a road test but sometimes you have to add a bit of driving that needs some space such as a car park so you can drive slowly and turn hard lock to lock a few times at which point the steering often comes back to life and the fault clears itself. Sometimes you have to go through a laborious set up procedure which I find VCDS will not do and I have to use VAS PC in Guided Fault Finding mode.

I know this post is a year old but I'm having the exactly the same problem and I cannot find the clutch control switch anywhere. Was wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction as I've had most of the car apart and can't see it! It's a 53 1.9 to touran.

It is on the master cylinder which pokes through into the engine bay, it is easier to take the clutch pedal box out.
