Where do I start...we have just purchased a 2004 2.0 TDI Touran and are having a number of issues. On test drive car seemed fine, no smoke.

First issue was coolant warning light. So this gets topped up every few days.

Next issue is massive amount of white smoke at idle and under load.

Occasional blue smoke and the check oil level light just came on so it must be burning oil as well as coolant?

It starts and drives fine, oil looks a normal colour in filler cap.

Any ideas what to expect? I don't think this will be a cheap fix

I would be taking it back to them asking for a foc fix or your money back.

about 2 weeks now, it was a private sale though so no taking back

I read somewhere that the egr cooler will damage the turbo if it is left leaking for a long time, water ingress into the turbo or something? it's off to the local garage tomorrow anyhow, once fixed it will be part ex'd for another Jap car, I didn't research VW reliability as I was under the impression it was the best out there...how wrong was I the TDi's seem riddled with problems.

if it was a private sale then you still have rights, especially if the private seller is actually a trader posing as a private seller. egr cooler is not a likely candiadate if its loosing oil though, so i would expect it to be more than that. if there are no external oil leaks then it must be burning it and thats normally worn bores, worn turbo etc...
good luck with anything japanese. it used to be a case of buying jap because they never broke down, but thats no longer true. vw's have their faults but at least the support is there to fix them, you try getting even a wiring diagram for anything else.
