    Hello,
Lots of questions, hopefully you can help.
Looking for an A6 Avant with one of the bigger petrol engines 2.7, 3.0 or possible 4.2.
I'm new to Audi A6s but been around long enough to know my limitations on spanner work, luckily I know a brilliant mechanic
From reading through the forum, I will need to check the drains are not blocked and the rear window washer isn't leaking over electrics but is there anything else in particular with these engines or the avant in general.
Hoping to get one with lpg or in good enough nick to justify putting lpg in it. (I do 20 -25k a year)
Don't want an allroad as I don't need it and it just adds complications.
I presume they all have cambelts that need changed, how many miles between recommended changes?
Is servicing easy and what are the recommended intervals?

Think that is all, at least for now

    Thanks

    Graham

The 2.7 is a turbo. Very usable engine but may be getting on a bit and not sure of it works with lpg. The earlier engine was a 2.8, then the 3.0. Not many 4.2 engines on the go but if you can find one they are usually very well specced.
The avants can have issues with the rear screen wash-washer pipe breaks and then leaks water into the tailgate and boot.
Cambelt changes are 75,000 or 5 years whichever comes sooner. Get the water pump done at the same time.
Suspension arms will clunk and need changing at some point. Straightforward but takes a while.
It will probably be a quattro and tiptronic. The tiptronic gearbox is supposed to be sealed for life but it needs an oil change at around 100,000m. This is pretty expensive.
They tend to go through cv boots and the coil packs can go.
    Avoid the 2.4 engine.
Lovely cars and I still miss mine. Find myself looking at the RS6 quite a lot! Getting very cheap at the moment-even saw one with lpg.

To take what Scott K has said a step further, the worst problem with the rear washer pipe is actually in the front passenger footwell inside the car. There is a joint in the pipe at this point and either thanks to a blocked washer jet or frozen washer fluid, the joint will blow apart and leak fluid under the carpet (and the thick foam soundproofing underneath). The real problem with this is the control module that's under the carpet in the footwell which can get seriously damaged by the water. If you are looking at an Avant to buy, try to check UNDER the carpet for this problem - it's common.

A wise man once said about the 2.7 turbo engine "congratulations, you have just bought the most maintenance-hungry engine ever made"

Barring any engine made by Alfa Romeo, I'd say that was correct.

It's a lovely engine when working well, but it often isn't...
