This morning I got in the car, put the key in and the car started without me pressing the clutch, thought to myself I must have done it without realising so turned it off and it did the same again. Sounded lumpy and very noisy so I left it running a minute and then tried again, same thing.... didn't have time to check it out as I was off to work. Drove about 500 metres and then the steering warning light came on and the dash lights flickered so I pulled up and turned off the engine.

Now it won't start! No errors on the dash, literally put the key in and depress the clutch and nothing, doesn't even try and start. Tried the booster I keep fully charged on the battery but nothing.

    Any ideas?

steering lock fault, quite a well documented problem. try the search function if it works and see what you can find. if it doesn't work, google it and it may take you to some of the threads on here already about it.

I had that done a couple of years ago at the dealer (VW paid), these are different symptoms for when I had that problem, it's not even turning or firing this time.

oh ok, probably need to start with a code read then.i don't think its just a clutch switch due to the poor running when it did start.

Got a recovery truck on the way as I can't move it and I'm blocking 2 driveways :-)

The last couple of times I tried to start it before I walked back home it did click which makes me think battery issue but I'm no expert and just guessing.

Take the timing belt cover off and see if the belt it's still in one piece... Definitely something is amiss if it started running lumpy and noisy, it's most likely skipped timing bending a few valves and rockers hence it won't turn over now...
