Hi all. I'm experiencing a problem with my steering. When I start driving and everything's cold it seems ok, but once its warmed up the steeringis very noisy. (especially when accelerating). Fluid level is fine. I don't know if its the same problem but I have a bit of play in the steeringtoo but it's not any of the ball jointsor bushes. I had the car in the air and pushed the wheels side to side, I could hear the fluid flowing around the system when I did this (it sounded like it has air in it but not to sure). Also I had the drive belt off and the pas pump pulley has a small amount of play in it, but not leaking. Is this normal? There is also a slight squeak from round there some where when the engine is running.
Any ideas would be very much appreciated. Thanks. Steve.

Hello is the squeak from the actual belt try putting talcum powder on it and see if it goes. The other reason it might squeak is the alternator pulley clutch may be going. You can check this by removing the belt put a screwdriver in the alternator to lock the drive and you should be able to move the alternator pulley clockwise and anti clockwise if it only moves clockwise your alternator pulley clutch has gone.

Hi flapperjack76. Thank you very much for your reply. If it is the alternator pulley, would it get worse as it heats up? Also do you think it has anything to do with the play in the steering?

Hello how bad is the squeak? You could post a video on here and I will listen. It will not have anything to do with the play in the steering.

Not very bad. Everything gets worse when it warms up. I have a video of it but can't work out how to upload it. It just says "Enter your video clip URL below." but it hasn't got one. It's just on my desk top.
Jus watched a youtube clip and someone on there said if it spins both ways it's knackered. Im confused now. You said it should spin both ways.

No need to remove the belt just try turning the internal fan with a soft stick (chop sticks are ideal, but don't let the wife know) it should turn ONE WAY ONLY!
The alternator clutch will cause noise and strange problems if seized but not steering play, it could be a problem to be sorted but you may have others.

Hi all. Just thought I would let you all know it was the steering rack that was knackered. The squeaking seems to have stopped since it was changed. Strange.
Thanks to all for your views.
