VW POLO 2004 1.2 Twist (European model) I installed a set of led lights, to the number plate and side lights. The side lights worked but the number plate did not work. So I put back the old number plate lights but they did not work anymore.
Now I also noticed that I do not have any dashboard lights
(illumination of instruments) as well as the warning light is on all the time for the seatbelt and air-bag. I checked the fuses and they are all fine. The car, instruments and
other lights are all working very well.
Any body has any idea what the problem is?
    Many thanks

It sounds like a fault with your headlamp switch. The first thing to do is remove and check that Fuse 2 on the dash fusebox isn't blown. That's the number plate lamp fuse but it doesn't supply the dash illumination which is what has me thinking the switch has developed a fault. I've attached a fusebox diagram to help locate the correct fuse. The diagram shows a left hand drive fusebox. Yours will be a mirror image of the diagram.

If the fuse is OK you'd have to check that there is voltage coming out of the switch. The No. plate lights and dash illumination come off a different part of the switch to the side/tail lights. To remove the switch, with the lights all off push the knob in an rotate it to the side light position. You should now be able to pull the switch out of the dash.

With the switch removed (but still plugged in) you should see 3 grey coloured wires grouped together. You want to check for voltage on those 3 wires when the side lights are switched on. I'm sure the one for the No. plate lamps and dash illumination is grey with a blue stripe. You should have 12Volts on the all 3 of the grey wires.

Check that and post back what you find.

    Jim.
