Start by changing/checking the fuel temperature sensor and go from there.

Personally, if I had VCDS, I'd check the wiring first:
Read the fuel temp in measured values (block 07, I think). It'll probably be at -20'C or something since it's an open circuit fault code.
A quick and dirty wiring test would be to simply short the two pins of the fuel temp sensor connector together (harness side). If the wiring is OK the measured value will change to something higher than the ambient temperature.
You'll also have a new DTC in memory if the wiring is OK. Your original open/short to B+ will now be intermittent and you'll have a G81 short to ground.

If the wiring checks out OK, now you can replace the sensor with a degree of confidence that it'll cure the problem.

    Jim.

These sensors are cheap, easy to change and they do fail

Maybe, but why replace something that isn't broken? Surely if the sensor is easy to replace, it must be even easier to do the wiring check and know for sure why your replacing it.
And wouldn't you feel a little better about your investment in VCDS when you get to use it as something more than a code reader?

You can also check the pressure in a bald tyre even though experience tells you it's not fit for purpose

I have this fault code - please could you tell me where is it located on a Polo 1.9 TDI (100PS) (2005). My local europarts does not seem to have the item, is it direct from VW? thanks

It will be on a flange near front of engine or side of cylinder head.
Might be able to give you a part number.
Which engine code do you have?
    Where are you from?
