    Hi All
Can anyone give me advice as to the correct way to take up the slack in the gearshift cables on my 2003 VW Golf 1.9 GT TDi 130.
I have looked on YouTube and understand what to do but my gearbox doesn't have the L shaped pin/lever or plunger you have to push in on the gearbox to lock the arm mechanism whilst taking up any slack in the cables.
On top of the gearbox there is a plastic plug/cover over what looks like a hole but I am unsure and reluctant to insert a pin (5mm) to lock the mechanism.
There isn't a lot of slack movement at the gearstick but just wanted to see if it made a difference and make life easier for my wife when she drives it.

IS THIS ANY HELP SHOWS FOR TWO METHODS FOR DIFFERENT GEARBOX DATES

Adjusting selector mechanism, gearbox with retaining pin (through gearbox date 18 05 3)
The selector shaft -A- is secured with a retaining pin -arrow-.
Special tools and workshop equipment required
    t Locking pin -T10027-
    Note
t The following points are essential to ensure correct adjustment of selector mechanism:
t Moving parts of selector mechanism and elements transferring force must be in proper condition.
t Selector mechanism must move freely.
t Gearbox, clutch and clutch mechanism must also be in proper condition.
l Gearbox must be in neutral.
Pull locking mechanisms on gate selector cable and gear selector cable forward to stop -direction of arrow 1- and then turn to left to lock -direction of arrow 2-.
    Secure selector shaft as follows:
Press selector shaft down -direction of arrow 1-.
While pressing selector shaft down, push locking pin -A- into gearbox (-direction of arrow-) until it engages.
This locks the selector shaft; it cannot be moved any more.
Carefully lever cover off centre console -arrows-.
Now secure gear lever as follows:
Move gear lever in neutral leftwards into gate for 1st and 2nd gears.
Guide locking pin -T10027- through hole -A- into hole -B-.
Now turn locking mechanism on gear selector cable and gate selector cable clockwise to stop (-direction of arrow-).
Spring presses locking mechanism into original position.
Now pull locking pin -A- back to original position (-direction of arrow-).
Pull locking pin -T10027- out of holes -A- and -B-.
    Clip gaiter into frame.

    Functional check
l With gearbox in neutral, gear lever must rest in gate for 3rd and 4th gear.
    Operate clutch.
Select all gears several times. Pay particular attention to operation of reverse gear lock.
If it continues to be difficult to engage a gear after repeated attempts, repeat adjustment procedure of selector mechanism

    Hi arman123 Top gear

Thanks for the quick reply and comprehensive instruction sheets.
This is the methods viewed on You Tube but I was obviously not looking in the correct place for the locking plunger.
Will give it another go tomorrow after work.
Put my glasses on this time.

    Cheers

    Martin
