Technical product information Transaction No.: 2011248/8

Loud rattling noises from engine compartment - vulcanisation of pulley cracked - A4/A6/A8 3.0 TDI

    Release date: 18-Jun-2012

    Customer statement / workshop findings

Loud rattling noises from the engine compartment at start, at idle speed and when driving. Power steering assistance may be stiff or various warning lights come on.

    Technical background

The vulcanisation on the vibration damper of the crankshaft has come off. As a result, the outer ring of the vibration damper wobbles and knocks against the inner ring.
In extreme cases, the vibration damper can damage the front of the seal flange.
Because of the wobbling of the vibration damper the belt, drive (for alternator, water pump, power steering pump and air conditioning compressor) can vibrate and the idler roller (plastic roller) of the belt tensioner can get very hot, so that the plastic roller can come off the bearing shaft.
As a result, the belt can fall off and the units supported by the drive fail.

    Production change

Improved production, A 6 from Chassis number WAUZZZ4F36N167806

    Measure

    1. Replace the vibration damper (use new mounting bolts).
Fit an 8 hole washer (Part No. WHT 000950A) between the bolt head and the vibration damper.

    2. The belt tensioner and the mounting bolt M10 must also be replaced.
Note: Tightening torque of the belt tensioner (M10) changed to: 50 Nm +90°

Early V6 TDi's didn't have that washer, later engines have it, have some images of removed engines.

I did have an earlier edition of that TPI / TSB which shows images of the very early V6 TDi where an idler/bracket was also dropped from use and that TPI / TSB stated what was updated vibration dampener IIRC, I'll try to find it.

When looking at data history for that part it becomes a bit blurred as to which is the updated part.

Perhaps there isn't and the addition of the washer was the production change/improvement

I don't think it's a recall as such, only from my small experience with my car/dealer, things like campaigns they'll do FOC even when out of warranty.

Most TPI / TSB are only FOC when vehicle under manufacturer warranty, again only from my own dealings with main dealer.

I have F48 VIN and its just dropped off at 97K. In now for new pulley, belt, tensioner and high pressure diesel pump toothed belt whilst its in bits. Also a small leak on PAS fluid cooler so a new one of those too...Not much change out of £900 but I am planning on keeping the car.

I think regardless of VIN with the age & mileage on the C6 most of them will fail at some point.
