Another thing I would try is to remove the fuse for the 5F module and leaving it powered down for a few minutes, as it could just be the firmware is in a faulty state.

Another option is to check all the connections behind the glove box, you only need an 8mm socket to remove the glove box.

Also check all the connections are secure, it should look something like this behind there but your wiring will look neater and better length, mine looks like that as I retrofited MMI 3G.

Hmmm that's interesting. I fitted my own ami and was all ok but the glove box was rattling so I took it out about 2 weeks ago. Might give that a try first. I hope it's as simple as that!

Yes the 5F unit replaces a lot of modules, Navigation, BT, AMI and SDS so Audi charge ££££. I've purchased a few 5F HDD units off ebay and the most I have paid is £300, and that was for the HDD & SIM version

Ok I'll try removing the glove box again and making sure the connections are secure. It is very on and off (literally) so it could just be a loose cable? Damn, I hope it's just that! :-(

You may find the quadlock connector is not secure and causing the fault, may explain why it's not showing up in the optical bus list.

Well, I dropped the glovebox out this morning and had a look at the wires. Removed the quadlock and put back in, no change

When I put the key in the ignition (not turned) the 5f unit (the nav/sd card unit?) whirs on and off, the fan spin up and down half a dozen times then cuts out. Not sure if this is normal behaviour?

Anyway, still getting nothing when the key goes in and very temperamental when it actually loads MMI, if at all.

Also, did a scan with te unit 'working' and this is what I got:

And when I do the optical bus diag this happens:

Doesn't look good for the 5f unit then? M

Maybe I'll take a look at Ebay!

No, the fan should not do that, it does sound like the unit is faulty.

Look for a unit starting with 4E0 don't bother if say's A8, Q7 etc as the firmware on the unit will work on the A6, just need to change the car type in the hidden menu.

You could also look at a 4H0 module which is MMI 3G+ but it's unknown what will work correctly, and you would need to flash the radio & CD-Change with the 3G+ firmware and i'm not sure if they could be flashed back to 3G. (I'm about to fit MMI 3G + into my a6 and see what works, and what is broken.... I should know this in the net few weeks.)

I would look at either a 666 unit or 670 that will give you the HDD & SIM option

Part number ends in 666 = HDD
Part number ends in 670 = HDD + SIM

    One like this AUDI A6/A8 MMI 3G MULTIMEDIA CD/SD PLAYER 4E0035670/4E0 035 670 | eBay

Ignore anything with 8V0 which is A3 and I don't believe the firmware on the unit will work in an A6. An A4 unit may would but you would need to change the faceplate.

Thanks for the info. If I went for the hdd version, how would that tie in with my current system? I upgraded to the 2014 maps, could I get these on the new unit?

Would love to go 3G+ but not confident enough to lol had no problem ripping my Mondeo apart but this is a bit different for me.

Yes very easy to update with the latest 2014 firmware and maps + the HDD maps give far mode detail and actual 3D views of citys. PM for firmware & maps details.

The HDD unit is a direct replacement for your faulty one, and all your existing hardware will just work. The only module you will need to code is the new 5F module to set the options you have fitted to you car.
