  1. Angry 2001 Passat TDi 130 Engine running fault nightmare

    Hello There
I am new to this site and needing help desperately.
In late June (driving thru floods) i developed an intermittent engine fault. The engine slowly starts to run very lumpy/misfiring and lacks power++. So much so that the gearbox (auto) will not change gear and this has to be done using the tiptronic manual shift. I can only limp home at a max of about 30mph when this happens and i am also in fear of damaging the main engine components. It runs so rough that the whole car pulsates. The next AM it starts and runs OK but lacks power, on acceleration from standing it is gutless for about 2-3 seconds then accelerates as if the turbo has decided to come in, it does this through the revs. Then the main running fault begins again after anything from 1 to 20 mins (sorry but this is long winded).

Anyway, took it to my usual independent garage. Found approx 2-3" water in bulkhead beneath scuttle panel- drained it, passenger footwell carpet was also sodden. Auto electrician - Plug in - No fault found - sent ECU away for full test - came back A1. So they gave the car to local VW dealership and they could not diagnose the fault using their (seemingly inadequate by now) equipment. They engaged a 'specialist technician' to fault find. He decided that the fault was through water damage and that this created a problem with the tandem pump. Thus, my insurance have payed for the work which involved a replacement tandem pump as well as a faulty injector. NOW ALMOST 3 MONTHS SINCE FAULT OCCURED! without courtesy car as it is not an 'approved' repair centre.

Compression test was normal indicating conrods ok etc.

I picked the car up and it lacked power with seemingly flat periods of acceleration/power similar to previously. Then 5 days later it is back to square one running like a rotavator.

The main dealer are a nightmare, obstructive, evasive and stringing me along. Personally i think they have just taken a wild guess and the insurance co's money as they are clueless. They have repeatedly sideswerved my attempts to discuss the problem with their technician (v busy at the moment sir etc).

I am a qualified aircraft propulsion/engine technician, athough i changed career some 15 years ago. Nevertheless, i am still in possession of my, albeit rusty, engineering knowledge of machines far more sophisticated than a VW Passat. Electronically i am a layman. Please can somebody point me in the right direction as i now have no faith whatsoever in the VW techs and need my car to work.

could well be the air flow sensor.this is a hot wire which resistance changes as the air speed changes.if this wire gets contarminated ie with water the resistance output to ecu changes.i am on my third air flow meter 1st damaged with a leaf the 2nd with water.vw golf tdi estate owner
