Do you know anyone with an Audi that has AMI (the Mk 6 Golf also uses the same cable if has the Media Interface fitted). You could then validate if the cable works or not. The dealer might let you try it in a car they have in on the site if you ask nicely

Why would this work? Link:- AMI (Audi Music Interface) – Cable Compatability Music | I Am Audi

So as highlighted in link you must have had lastest firmware in your AMI for K cable to work otherwise a K cable in MMI 2G AMI with older FW you get error message.

@Muppet_man only way to do AMI FW update is via USB stick/cable, link in post one of this thread active, Link:- Important ami update online DOWNLOAD

I went to Audi today and they were able to confirm that 510 K was for an Audi Allroad, but they said it was for models from 2008 to 2010, which I suspect means 3G versions and not a 2G like mine. The stores did show 510 K as an updated part for a 510 L, but not for the years 2006 to 2007. It simply says that 510 L is for older iPod classic and older iPods but not iPhone compatible.

The compatibility chart you kindly gave the link for was quite interesting although strangely, as you point out, it seems to say that the 510 K could be used with the 2G system if a software update is done. However I already have the latest version, so sadly that doesn't really help. I take it that by software they mean the same as firmware. I guess I could run the update discs again, but I doubt they would do anything since they have no items that come up with 'require update' letter. So it won't really install anything. It does say that - CAUTION: Consumer SW-update for the 2G AMI-MOST units are only possible with 2G AMI SW > 700 , however I'm not really sure I know what that means.

Thanks for the link, I've downloaded the file, and will have to order a USB lead and give it a try. Although of course, if the USB lead doesn't work, I won't be able to load the new firmware!

Sadly they didn't have a car on site that would fit the bill.

Once again guys, thanks very much for all of your input. Hopefully I will get to the bottom of this eventually.

My daily drive is a VW Crafter, SWMBO drives the A6. The DAB keeps her entertained, I can post u my USB lead, as long as u resend after use.

IIRC my AMI was latest firmware/software and thus the linked file did nothing but I will check my VCDS logs as to what FW/SW in my AMI tomorrow afternoon as busy in morning.

That is a very kind offer, however I found one on E-Bay last night with the same Q part number as yours for a fiver, so I've ordered it and hopefully will receive it soon. How do you check the firmware of the AMI?

    Thanks for your time.

Mine's version 850 firmware, besides VCDS log to see version/info you maybe able to see it in hidden menu (green/service) you can see SW/HW part numbers in log, hardware version is H20. It also shows as media player 2 due to be doing the wiring mod/coding as per the AMI retro guide I posted in how to section.

There maybe a log of Chris's on forum but I'm sure he'll post one for you.

    Hi,
I'm going out to see if I can look at those details without a VCDS as I don't have one. I have a Snap on Verus and an Ultra as well as an Omintec Pro, but frustratingly you can't do that with any of them!

I haven't done the mod with the wire, but since I've tried the unit on its own without the CD in place, I guessed this would not be the reason for the malfunction.

Roll on my USB lead arriving.

    Thanks

It looks like mine is a very much older unit. The 4E0 035 785 part number doesn't end in 'K' like yours, and the version number of V170 and software of H09 seem to be much older. Maybe this is the issue? I hope it is able to take the USB update! Hopefully the lead will arrive tomorrow.

    I'll let you know.
