I'm fairly certain the block and heads of the A** engines are the same. The power differnce is in the turbos, pumps, injectors and ECU mapping.
The B** engines I believe have some minor differences, and need a couple of ancilleries to make them fit, but can't remember what.

What made the AKE 180bhp compared to the 155bhp and 163bhp engines? I have good leads on an AYM and a BAU engine. Are these OK for me to use?
A replacement engine sounds reasonable. About the mechanics on the 2,5 tdi, they are all pretty much the same. What differs is different pistons ( compression ratio) injectors, turbos and pumps.
You can fit any engine ( 99-05) if you use your old Injection pump, if your old engine have the brown connector to the needlelift, you need to cut of some plastic on the new one to make it fit, last I think the vacum pump have different connectors,
but that's an easy fix too.

The AKW, BAU, BCZ , BDG, BDH and AYM are the same bottom end so some VW Passat’s and Skoda Superb’s can donate. The plate you need is VAG part number 059 103 150 J for pre mid 2002 engines and is £170.

Thanks again for the excellent advice. What would be the preferred engine, the BDG/BDH with roller fingers, or are all engines really much the same in terms of top end reliability?

Just a little update, it looks like I have located a decent BDG engine from a Skoda Superb. I think I will probably go for this as it seems BDG is as good as anything! I will keep this thread up to date. Thanks again to everyone who contributed so far, you have been of great help.

I can't see an issue fitting a BDG. I have used those heads on an AKE, in fact it is what Audi give you if you buy new heads.

That's brilliant news. The engine I'm getting is from a 2007 Skoda Superb with 80,000 miles so qute nice to discover the old 2.5tdi's were still used by Skoda until 2007! Hopefully it will be in very good condition. The car it came from was really immaculate, just written off in a rear-ender.

Just a little update and a few more pictures. Below is a picture of the remaining part of the broken tensioner bolt and the state of the threads on it and in the hole it came from. I also attached a few pics of removing the engine - quite a straightforward job on this car but not the most fun to do outside! I do have a big shed but unfortunately it is occupied with other car projects at the moment so I bit the bullet and did this job outside. My 'new' engine is due to arrive on Friday this week so things going to plan I might get the car back on the road for the middle of next week or something.

Good work so far! If you're looking for company when you get round to doing the timing, I'd be keen to look over your shoulder for some tips. I need to do the timing belt at some point on mine. Had an AKE in an A4 before, but never had it long enough to get in at the front end. I'm based near Fort William, so would be happy to drive up!
