Those are the ones! The light fingered little badge theifs stole most of our company cars (and vans) VW badges Some wern't too bothered if they ripped half the grilles off as well. That was one of the reasons some of us were upgraded to Audi's. I got a Volvo it caught fire in the end and cremated itself

This thread is going off on a tangent, albeit a parallel one. I'm waiting for the OP that started it to complain, he may also mention his right to be called Loretta

Bring the thread back on topic (sort of). I wonder if the OP will ever post up a photo of the damaged TB. In truth I've never seen a failed TB 'in the flesh' and just wonder how exactly they fail. Do they just snap or disintergrate? Sorry for being a bore, it's the nosey retired engineer in me. In a past life I used to have to inspect parts and predict their failure points ect. So that failure could then be engineered out of the picture. (Well, that was the theory)

I often seen them with a tooth or two missing. Even badly cracked ones can still perform. The technology in them is amazing.

Thanks for the photo. So the tooth departing starts the stress process then? That's what it looks like to me. I did see a balancer shaft belt on a Hyundai 2.4 4 cylinder that had lost all of it's teeth but hadn't snapped. The daft thing about that engine is that this small belt is almost hidden under a metal cover. The Mechanic doing the TB change doubted that the belt had ever been changed in over 200K miles of motoring. Respect to the technology I say

It's a good idea to take off the cover occasionally and check the belt while turning the engine over with a spanner. On belts over 3 years old do it every month or so.. 1 tooth missing wont make much difference but the belt is weaker where the tooth was and then it's two teeth then three then it slips and bends a few valves.

Good idea that. My policy is to change all belts at 4 years regardless of mileage. I haven't had one break on me yet on any of our cars. some of the family cars I look after do tiny mileage but better safe than sorry. A few bob for a belt is far better than an engine re-build!
