Could have bought a A6 3.0Tdi with what you've spent.

True...... and then have to do DPF, turbo, manifold flaps, EGR cooler, throttle body and timing chains........

    Glad you kept it.

I've got the same car and I won't part with it. As Crasher said above somewhere VW hit a sweetspot with that car.

If you need some inspiration, take a look at my adventures of owning and keeping it going (linky below). I've had a fair few minor niggles and a few major ones too but cannot think of anything I'd like to replace it with at this point in time.
    My B5.5 TDI diary.

... the heater matrix failure nearly had me get rid but I've stuck with her.

I know it has potential to be a money pit, but DPF's and Turbo issues appear MUCH rarer in comparison to the 1.9/2.0tdi engine.
Manifold flaps can be fixed fairly cheaply these days, or just left & mapped out.
EGR cooler....doesn't appear any more problematic than a 2.0Tdi oil cooler for example.
Throttle body: heard of a few issues.
Timing chain issues: appears mostly on earlier models, but you see plenty of 3.0tdi's with 200k plus and no issues. I bet you see more timing belts break than you see chain issues?

I still believe it the best engine in the Audi range taking all aspects in to account.

I think it must be five years since I saw a failed timing belt and chains aren't that common really BUT when they go it is the end of the car. V6 TDI actuator issues are becoming a problem and we have had problems getting the turbo rebuilt correctly. We had a 2007 A4 cabrio come in yesterday and the turbo is coming off tomorrow. At least they are three times quicker to take off than a 4 cylinder.
