Hmmmm. Always been set on an A6. (Since I can't afford an RS6 atm lmao) Just didn't think they were that unreliable. :/

They're not unreliable as such, it's just even a small problem will escalate into a big repair bill and with the mmi system and the V6 engine little niggles will appear and will need fixed as the cars get older.

Yeah I hear you there. I don't mind maintenance so much due to age. The majority or work I can easily do myself ( with the exception of Major electrical stuff) but my passat stuff is ongoing. Every weekend I'm under it fixing or trying to diagnose something and it's getting ridiculous. Plus. I travel all over all the time. So want something big with plenty of space and comfortable.

Skoda Superb 1.9 TDI, uber reliable and bigger than an A6 I think. Considerably cheaper also.

Like power aswell though. Live in the middle of the lakes so needs to be a good overtaker. That said. I did have a look at the Octavia VRS estate which looks nice. Only downside was no cruise control or heated seats.

Always retrofittable. I remapped my A3 1.9 and it's brought it up to around 160bhp. Totally different car now.

Aye but prefer to not have to do that and just buy a car that's powerful looks good and can be insured without addition of mods if you know what I mean.

I will say that the 2011 Superb Elegance 170 looks like a nice car and has all the traits I'm after. But what's the power like in them? The reason I considered the 3.0 A6 is the torque spec...

The Passat 3B was the last great VW group cars, one of those "hits" they make every now and again such as the 66 1500 Beetle, 72 1600LE type 3, 74 Audi 100 Coupe S, 1983 Golf 1 GTI, 1990 Golf 2 GTI 16v, Golf 4 V6 4M, sweet spots and the 3B was one, I particularly like the pertol V6 4 motion. Taken to its perfection was the Superb 1 V6 TDI, an all time great but ohh for a 2.8V6 petrol 4WD!!!! The early Passat 3C is a very fragile car with many many serious issues, I would get a late one or preferably an early Superb 2, same cars as the Passat 3C but it seems far better built-tens of thousands of Taxi drivers can't be wrong....

    **Update**

I did indeed keep the Passat in the end, still going on 132.7k now .

Here's the list of small niggly bits (and not so niggly) that's it's had in the three years I've had it.

New clutch and DMF (twice as first one was used due to budget which eventually failed last month)
    Four new tyres last month
    Pollen filter housing
    Window regulators (front)
    Suspension arms (front)
Discs pads and caliper services (f&r)
    Brake fluid change,
Two services (major last year, minor this year)
    Headlight bulbs
    Alternator pulley
    Outer cv joints
    Exhaust hangers
    Rear wiper motor rebuild
    Starter motor rebuild
    Coolant temp sensor
New radiator and coolant (18month ago)
    Aircon recharge (last month)
New stereo (nice Sony double din DVD thingy)
New trims under bonnet (caps and stuff on covers, battery cover etc)
New sump plug (bigger as was stripped)
    New slave cylinder
New aux belt/AC belt with major service last year
    New Turbo-Bulkhead boost pipe (silicone)
New Crankshaft Oil Seal (FW end)
    New windscreen

    Still to do:
All four shock absorbers (fronts are failing badly)
All four wheel bearings (not gone yet but preventative)
    Exhaust flexi
    Headlight/taillight recon/polish
General bodywork scratches and stone chips repaired
    Gearbox Replacement
