    Audi A4 Avant 3.0 TDi Tiptronic Quattro 75k

    I have owned the car for about 2 months and am generally very pleased with it.
    Until a friend of mine pointed this out I hadn't noticed it but when starting from cold and occasionally when hot, upon starting there is a rattle like the starter hanging on or oil pressure trying to catch up. It lasts for no more than 2 seconds each time but doesn't do it every time.
    The car has just been serviced with genuine filters and oil etc.and MOT'd yesterday with no comments or suggested repairs necessary. Admittedly I hadn't noticed before the service and therefore never mentioned it. There doesn't seem to be a connection between the noise and the oil light as the oil light goes out immediately.
    Has anyone else experienced this or heard it on another vehicle or is there a commonality with this issue?
    Please don't guess, I am only looking for current Dealer Technician remarks, I look forward to any expert comments.

    Hmmmmm....

    Not sure about the courtesy of asking a question on a public forum and then issuing instructions on who may or may not answer.

    If you only want the opinions of dealer technicians, why not ring your local dealer?

    Is it loud enough to capture on a video?

    Has the car been on "longlife" servicing? I would probably say that it's your timing chains.

    Did you buy the car trade or private?

    courtesy doesn't come into it. I need a response from someone who knows and is not just guessing. Simple as that.

    Hi Chris
    I sort of guessed that one of the timing chain tensioners is to blame, I just wanted it confirmed. Is there one particular that causes problems?

    Marty, there wasn't a word of abuse or bullying in my response, just a gentle observation about forum etiquette, and a link to another thread with real (and hopefully helpful) information about cam chains. Entirely up to you whether it helps, of course, but either way, I hope you find a solution to your rattle.

    Meanwhile, the reason it says "Grumpy Old Man" in my avatar is because I put it there, by way of irony.

    No worries, bud, we've all been there. How old is your 3.0TDi, and what sort of service history has it had? Despite Audi's misplaced optimism, these motors live longer on frequent (annual or even less) oil changes, and not the long-life regime.

    Also, how long ago did you buy it, and was it dealer or private? If it was a dealer and you've had it less than six months, current Sale of Goods legislation puts you in quite a strong position.

    Private dealer really from Autotrader. Spent ages trying to find the right one and now this. Has FASH
    I have looked at the link you sent, the right hand tensioner is from sitting in drivers seat yeah? I assume you have another tensioner on the left bank the same?
    I hope that replacing the one does it as I do not want to remove the engine/gearbox unless I have to.
