Engine Fault Warning Light - 1.6TDi

In the last 3-4 weeks I have had an engine fault warning light illuminate on the dash. When this happens there is no loss of performance and when I usually switch off the engine and drive the car again the warning light does not come on. It's happened 3 times now with the same pattern of coming on and not reappearing with the next engine start.

Mileage is 42000.I know its vague but I this the precursor to any known problems?

Well Bob you need to get your motor scanned (preferably with VAG-COM\VCDS) for any error codes logged in the ecu and post them, that will save a lot of guessing.

I would have to find someone with the equipment to do that Keith as I don't have it. The only people I know who have one is the local VW dealer and I don't know if they would share the codes with me.

Fingers crossed you've not got the infamous EGR valve trouble at 42k..........but 3x times with the light is not the usual sp/form.......

Where in hearts are you bud, I have vcds and am near bedford, happily do a full scan for you find any codes logged

I just contacted my local VW dealer and it was a fruitful call. The warning light that has come on is the glow plug warning light, but the cost of investigating the problem starts at £138 just for the diagnostic! Ouch!!!

Big ouch, my offer still stands, but I am in Bedford, may be someone on here closer, I don't pretend to be an expert, but I have run a full scan on mine and found a few faults.
